...For example, the new owners told Lombardi to hardball goalie Evgeni Nabokov and defenseman Brad Stuart on what should have been no-brainer contracts, during training camp, at a time when a contender needs continuity. Lombardi did as told, Stuart came back (and got hurt), and after a few games, so did Nabokov. Neither has been as good as a year ago, and it is hard to slough off their holdouts as "no big thing."
...But people, particularly the owners, expected more, and when Scott Thornton and Teemu Selanne and Mike Ricci weren't moved, Lombardi's position became untenable. He was trying to make sensible hockey deals, when all they wanted from him was deals.
...So one week after a trading deadline in which the Sharks were active but not hyperactive, the general manager joined the most successful coach and the franchise's leading scorer at the post office.
The San Jose Sharks' lost season is mercifully coming to an end soon. The word is ownership let Dean Lombardi go (after giving him the old vote of confidence routine a month ago) principally because of his failure to divest the roster of high salaries before the trade deadline. True, he dealt Owen Nolan, but he fell short in his efforts to move Teemu Selanne, Vincent Damphousse and Adam Graves, and possibly Mike Ricci. Some of that failure was clearly out of his hands. Selanne didn't want to be moved, Damphousse couldn't work out a contract with Colorado, thereby nixing a deal, and the Flyers backed out of an agreed- upon trade for Graves. No matter what your take is on Lombardi, he has made a meaningful contribution to the franchise's fortunes, especially over the past five years or so. It wasn't his fault his best players tanked this season.

The Montreal Canadiens have agree to terms with restricted free agent Andrei Kostitsyn.
Sources say it's a three year deal worth $3.25 million per year.
Kostitsyn was Montreal's first round pick, 10th overall, in the 2003 draft. He had a breakthrough season in 2007-2008, scoring 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points in 78 games with Montreal.
Kostitsyn scored 12 goals on the powerplay and added five game winners. He was also a solid +15.
In his first NHL postseason action last spring, he scored five goals and three assists in 12 games.

I'm almost 100% Kopitar fired Meehan at one point. I'll post the link when I find it.
EDIT: Found it.
Quote:
Meehan's Newport Sports represents more NHL players than any other agency and has gone through a period of tumult recently. While Newport represents a flurry of blue-chip prospects – including Steven Stamkos, the likely No. 1 draft pick this summer – several high-profile NHL stars have recently severed ties to Newport, including Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar and Washington's Alex Ovechkin.
"With Alex there was a great sense of disappointment because we put so much time into his transition from Russia to here," Meehan says, adding that with Kopitar, he was "disillusioned, because we just don't know why."
For those who might not know, Brisson is one of the biggest agents in the game and is close friends with Luc Robitaille. His client list is deep and impressive and also includes Jack Johnson and Anze Kopitar.
aside from that, being unable to ditch contracts at the deadline seems to be the general consensus (even among many articles i did not cite) on what was the largest factor for his dismissal in San Jose.
believing one side and not the other has been en vogue on both message boards, particularly among those who have some mythological +5 Battle Axe to grind with Lombardi.
so by taking that stance, let us assume that Dean indeed tried to move Blake TWICE...
I think that Kostitsyn's numbers prove that he had a little bit better year than O'Sullivan.
If I had to guess, I would say that considering Kostitsyn is probably in line to earn 15 to 20 percent more than O'Sullivan. The Habs forward had a great playoffs, plays in Montreal (high taxes) and has a better goal scoring resume.
The Kings would probably like to pay O'Sullivan less than Brown for atleast the next few years.
I'm guessing that a 4 year deal will be struck for about 12 million. 2.25, 2.75, 3.25, 3.75.
