About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. At the start of the year there was a lot of talk about disappointment in Brian Lee at training camp, but I'm not sure how he stands with Ottawa now.
With Zubov brought up recently for one game to play 14 minutes on the top line might be an indication.. Sens 1st and Zubov to hopefully center our 2nd line with Fro?
blakes 6 million dollar contract is starting to look worth it.
my post is going to take the good things into account right now. this is assuming blake probably wouldn't have came here for less than 5 mil
here are some pros
- good mentoring for johnson, even though johnson wasn't hear yet. im sure DL had something like this in mind.
- gave us the potential to trade blake at the deadline, which we may end up seeing. it almost got us a solid goalie last year. it's looking like it may get us a first pick plus more this year. is $6m worth a first round pick plus more? it sure as hell has the potential to be.
- the way he's playing right now, if the kings were in a playoff hunt right now, he would be extremely valuable. just like other teams think he is in a playoff hunt.
- took the initiative (which he should as captain) to begin standing up for teammates and goalies midway through the first half of this season. now i think the team is looking like more of a team because of it. what a little leadership can do is amazing.
- right when dl's plan is starting to fruit, his 6mil contract will be off the books. he was basically paid to please AEG in the meantime of building a team in hopes of also helping the young players.
- i also think if blake in the playoffs this year he will help attract other FA's.
and the cons
- he played like crap about 80% of the time he was here during his contract, but who cares right that helps us with the picks (right?)
- he took up $6m of our salary cap and dented AEG's pocketbook. who cares right? it's not like his contract prevented us from overpaying another player. we still have the $$$.
- might have taught some bad tendencies to jack. i don't think jack is that stupid and haven't seen any of blakes defensive mishaps performed by jack.
i seriously think this team with the lineup we've had the past few weeks, without cammi, is a goalie and a seasoned stay at home defenseman (eg. gleason) away from fighting for a spot. another solid fourth liner would be nice. but replacing willsie with purcell the other night made a world of difference on the third line.
i'm probably going to get blasted for that last paragraph
If two GMs want Blake, then the price goes up dramatically.
If three GMs want him, then all the better for us!
The market defines value. Same as if you and I both want the same item on eBay. As long as there are a couple GMs who want the same player, that just drives the price up. And don't forget, some GMs might not NEED him, but they want to make sure he doesn't land on a certain team to come back and haunt them in the post season.
I would say you are looking at a much better return then a simple first round pick.
I could see this as a package deal with Cammi/y now that they've lost one of their most relied upon scorers. That would up the anti on what we could get in return.
Cammy's not going to be dealt, DL's building around the core players. In the off season DL will try and lock Cammy for the long term like Brown. If he can't, then Cammy will be moved, but now is not the time.
As far as Blake, with how his been playing lately & how he's respected in the league, the return will be higher then a #1 & a prospect. There should be a strong bidding war and I expect DL to pillage who ever ends up with Blake.

I know I'm repeating a thought that has been expressed a million times BUT I have to say it again for my own sake . I agree that Cammy shouldn't be moved at the moment for the most part UNLESS the right deal comes along and with Heatley out and the Sens pretty stacked in guys that might deem it worth it... the right deal could come together with them. But it would have to be damn near raping them with sandpaper.

Cammy does not strike me as a guy who goes going to sign a reasonable long-term deal like Brown, I think his outrageous demands last year are proof of that, and the fact that he's a major union guy, IMO DL is already looking at what he can get for him.

I would love to think you are wrong but I get the sneaking suspision you are right.... just not the do it for the team kind of guy.
I dont *think* DL will be able to squeeze out a "decent" enough prospect + picks for Blake. I dont want a low end prospect for Blake.
I'd rather see us get something like a 1st in 08 or 09 (at our discretion) and a 2nd in 08 AND 09, and we throw in a mid-level prospect such as Gauthier or Moulson or Kanko; or perhaps a late round pick.
