There was a lot of talk last summer about what free agents we should pick up and how much the Kings would be willing to spend to get them. Drury, Gomez, Briere, etc all commanded top dollar and defensively, Souray may have been the best blue liner out there although that was not saying much.
Now while the Kings are sitting at the bottom of the pack, do we have any regrets about not signing those guys. I have been more than pleased with the development of O'Sullivan and Brown. With Kopitar as the centerpiece of our youth movement and Frolov playing at a point per game clip, I am really starting to believe that not spending that huge dollar amount on those guys was the right thign to do. Yes Nagy and Handzus and Calder have been under performig for the most part and yes it has taken a while for Stuart to find his stride but with the short deals they were signed for, are we really in that bad a shape.
If you could go back, what would you different or do you think it is what is to come that matters? I firmly believe goaltending is the next major off season acquistion via trade or free agency for us (although the list of free agent goalies is sketchy at best) while DL will use this trade deadline and draft to shore up our defensive ranks.
DL has tried to get some of top tier free agents : Chara and Drury and probably others, but most of these players do not want to play on the West coast and / or for the Kings, given they are a perennial non-playoff team.
Scott Hannan would've been the best fit for a Kings team that just traded Norstrom & lost a PK specialist in Miller. I said that as last season ended (obviously not here) & I'm sticking to it. That's who I was rooting for first & foremost & Stuart as a back up plan, not one of the big name forwards. I'm glad Dean didn't tie up 35-40 million in a UFA forward, all 3 of which are going to have to scramble to get 60 points this season. To me the huge ticket UFA's never payoff, the lone exception being Niedermayer in Anaheim & you can make the arguement that Scott at $6.75 million a season is a steal.
And I hope he doesn't spend a penny on forwards this off season. Giuliano, Nagy, Thornton & Willse are the forward UFA's. Bring back Giuliano, let Purcell replace Nagy, Boyle replace Thornton & Moulson replace Willse.

Very true. Until the kings show they are serious about winning, no top tier UFA will sign here.
Are they on the right track? Yes.
DL has to make trades or look within to fill the holes. Right now, the kings have some young kids that can fill in at the bottom lines.
DL is really big about players "paying their dues." Hopefully he won't sign 2nd to 3rd tier players to ridiculous contracts again this year.
