Handzus has the potential to be fully healthy, and settled into this team next year. the more I think about this one, the more I realize Lombardi may have figured he would be a bit slow for up to half of the season, and he was able to live with that because they werent going to contend anyway, but next year we might be able to see what this guy can really do, and flashes of it late in this season.
Now that would be some secondary scoring to put behind Kopitar, Frolov, Brown, Cammy if he is not dealt, and hopefully OSullivan will come around big time also. Not that scoring is even a huge problem, because this team is going to be lethal offensively in the coming years, but Lombardi played his cards with Handzus just right in my opinion.
great rationalization--I like it and subscribe to it as well- he works hard every night and I think at 100% he is a force--he already is oneo f our top pk guys!
I like what he can do fully healthy. I like the whole team (except Modry of course) and my main concern is just the coaching. I don't think Crawford fits this team. We need new coaching, not different players. I wouldn't mind pawning Blake off if we could get around that no trade clause, but we'll see what happens.
I'm definitely willing to wait to see what he can bring next year before passing judgement. I believe his procedure was done in November of 2006. It's been a little over one year. I can see him improving dramatically by then. I think it's too soon to grade him and I suspect that any possible dissappointment will be from physical limitation over anything else.
I was on board with the signing the day it happened, but thought it should have been more like 3 years, 3 million a year, not 4 years, 4 million a year.
I can't imagine another team would have given him more than that. I just hope his play gets a level better than it has been. There was a few game stretch where he was good, but has seemed to not quite be there lately.

Modry is Modry. It was a choice between Miller for 2 years and Modry for one. Miller missed a lot of games to injury so far this season as well. Modry was ideal for pairing with JMFJ at the beginning of the season because he is all about positioning. All in all, I'd say they made the right choice.
i think one thing alot are forgetting is handzus true value, it isnt to put up 20-30 goals 50-60 points, but his 2 way game and how to be a professional. i think its worth it to have a guy like this to show the 4-5 young guys we have what it means to be a professional.
Those are the stats you judge Handzus on. Im not even going to bother with Points are offensive stats. He has been inadequate all season in everything he is suppose to be doing "average".
I don't mean to be Debbie Downer, but even if he improves on his game, we are looking at an average 3rd line shutdown centerman. 4mil/season is too much to be spending on your number 3 center, especially when he isn't putting up any points. Lombardi's plan was extremely risky, and he will be lucky to break even. DL would be wise to move Handzus if someone made a halfway decent offer.
He was a good faceoff man at one point, best on the Flyers one season. I'm genuinely disappointed with that aspect of his game. Totally unacceptable for a defensive centerman to win <50% of his faceoffs, and I'm not sure how his recuperation can easily explain this aspect of his game being so far off for so long.

While his FO% is very poor, those other stats are TEAM stats. First of all, +/- is one of the dumbest statistics ever. I thought I knew you better than to use it for any basis of an argument.
And PK%... is Handzus out there for every PK? Is he responsible for every PP goal scored?
Sorry, you can argue he could put up better numbers, but he's far from one of the problems with the veterans.
