A number 1 pick in this years draft which will probably amount to the 25th or 26th pick, a SWAP of picks (2nd and 3rd for 3rd and 4th) some D-man Dallas knew would never come to the NHL.

I don't think Detroit would part with Kindl untill he hits the NHL. if you look at past trades with Detroit they tend to not overpay, don't trade top prospects (Fleischman, Mathias), and usually trade players they have already seen in the NHL (Kuznetsov, Avery, Erikson, Williams). It also looks like Blake will undoubtedly be a rental, so unless a team is extremely desperate I wouldn't expect too much beyond a first rounder. So something like 1st/Quincey/Meech/Ericsson/Pyett or less likely Lebda. Hell the kings could go for Mursak and have team Slovenia

Relatively inexpensive stay at home defenseman? 4.25M for a defenseman who plays 18 minutes a game, in Norstrom. Do you know how many minutes a game Jaroslav Modry, the throw in in the deal, plays? 18. While making 1.2M. Lombardi traded an over-the-hill dman for a 1st and an equally over-the-hill dman. In other words, he gained a 1st round draft pick while saving 3 million dollars in salary. That's WHAT HE GOT.
Who would I rather have Norstrom or Stuart? Stuart. It's not even close.

you are serious? You can't even begin to argue in favor of Lombardi when it comes to being smart under the cap. All you have to do is look at all his FA signings, every single one.

Well, lets see here:
For $4.25M we could have Matti's glorious 33GP, 0G, 1A, -8 and 16 PIMs...
or for $3.5M we could have Brad Stuart's 48GP, 4G, 9A, -15 and 59PIMs and an extra first round pick.
Neither one is particularly amazing, but atleast Stuart's -15 makes sense. How the hell does Matti Norstrom, the stay-at-home defenseman that we are apparently lacking so dearly have a -8 in Dallas?? No thanks man. Matti was overrated for a long time, and DL did a beautiful job trading him, saving money, and getting a 1st round pick out of it. I expect nothing less with Blake.

We also got Modry, who was pretty solid to start this season, FWIW.
But there should be more teams interested in bidding for Blake. You can argue whether or not he warrants that attention, but it is a reality. He's a former Norris winner who can help on the powerplay, when special teams are important.
Teams overpay to get veterans. Coburn for Zhitnik was one. O'Marra, Nilsson, and a 1st (basically 3 first rounders) for a playoff rental. The Thrashers traded Alex Bourret for Pascal freakin' Dupuis.

Look at the length of the free agent contracts that were signed. The only ones of consequential length are the two for Preissing and Handzus.
Lombardi has set the Kings up quite well to be able to trade these rentals for additional assets. Guys like Nagy, Stuart, Modry, and Blake are going to provide us with additional assets at the trade deadline.
Also, remember that guys like Nagy, Stuart, and Modry are just fillers that are here to hold down a roster spot until the reserve list is built and so the Kings don't have to throw the kids in Manchester to the wolves. Hopefully, this is a process that Lombardi can repeat for at least one more season. Calder is already a player that could be moved at next season's deadline and if Lombardi can bring in one or two more guys on one year deals, I am sure he would like to do this all over again next season.

They traded Matthias for an injured Bertuzzi:
Quote:
Just before the deadline, the Red Wings traded forward Shawn Matthias and two conditional draft picks to the Florida Panthers for Todd Bertuzzi. While Bertuzzi is currently injured, the Wings are hoping he will be ready to rumble before the calendars turn to April.
No on Mursak. Kindl and a 1st.
And you can tell me I'm wrong AFTER the trade goes down. Until then, STFU.
BTW, Matthias potted TWO tonight for the Panthers.
