About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Tukonen looks like a journeyman, at best.
We shoulda' taken Andrej Meszaros.
Tukonen has been stagnating in Manchester.
Meanwhile, in Ottawa...
(If CBGB can have Perry, I can have Meszaros)
And as adgy pointed out, he didn't get nearly as much ice time as guys like Boyle, Purcell or even Moulson.
And most of it was on the fourth line. He is supposed to have an offensive upside, but he wont get a shot to show case that with guliano and Ivanans. If you are a small in stature non aggressive forward why exactly is he being called up to play on the 4th line ?

I wouldn't call 6'2" 198 lb. small in stature. Like I have said before, he is only 21 yrs. old. Even if he doesn't blow you away with mind numbing points it's still too early to give up on this kid. To tell you the truth he should have matured in the Finnish leagues a little bit more before he came over. he will do better when he adds some more weight like in the 215 to 225 range.
The kid did have a shot. Late in the 3rd period, he was robbed by Telquist. Should have scored.
I was pretty pissed that he was playing on the 4th line. If your going to call him up, why in the hell are you playing him on the 4th line? At least give the kid a chance to see what he can do! It's not like you need to win anyway.
Yet another bonehead move from Crawford the genius.
I thought he was ****. though it might have been the booze
On the Coyote broadcast, in the 3rd period Panger said that he doesnt remember Tukenon being on the ice. He said if you are a call up you have to be more memorable than that.
He also said that when the Coyotes players were told that Boyle was sent down, they could not beleive it because he was so hard to play against.
When looking at all the guys from both teams, only Ivanans had less ice time than Tukonen (Ivanans 8:07, Tukonen 9:48). When I noticed Tukonen, which wasn't often, he seemed to have very short shifts. Its hard to judge someone when they aren't on the ice very much.
Here's what I think I might be able to see in Tuk.
He's not an obvious top 6 potential guy to begin with, and his point totals in the AHL would probably support that. Yes - he could be a late bloomer and something really great could happen with him (as it could for anyone). But ignoring that, and assuming he remains on the current glide path, I can see him continuing to develop as a defensive forward. The model I guess I would think that would be a good comparison would be the one that got Pahlsson where he is today.
Drafted by Col in 96 (albeit the 7th round - which is certainly NOT the 1st) and he stays in Sweden until he's 23 when he's part of the Bourque deal with the Av's. Then he's traded to the Ducks for 2 scrubs after he gets only 17 games under his belt as a Bruin. So the Bruins gave up on him at 23? I'd bet they'd like to have that one back eh?
Then plays all of the next season with the Ducks and the following season he's up and down with Cincy (I could swear that they even put him on waivers?). So they almost give up on the guy TOO but decide to hold onto him. I think Pahlsson TODAY is one hell of a defensive center, even if he plays on a team I don't particularly care for.
So lets slow down about dumping on the Tukonen guy because he has some pretty solid fundamental skills and abilities.
I grant that he's not going to be that impact scorer that leads us to the promised land of the Stanley Cup, but I don't expect that from him.
IMO - what I could expect from him is to play at least as serviceable as a role that Wilsie plays today. 2 good things might come from that. First he's going to be doing it at a far lower cost, and second is that he has a CHANCE that he may develop and improve in that role.
As long as Tuk's contract renwal demands are minimal then that's the way I think LA should go with him.
