There's esentially 4 top candidates: Bogosian, Shenn, Doughty and Pietrangelo.
Of those guys, Doughty is slightly more highly rated (generally speaking), but he's also the smallest (height-wise) of the bunch. Does that negatively impact his value to us, since we have such a smallish group already?
Do we need someone who is more 'defensive' oriented? A shut-down defensemen without as much emphasis on offensive talent? With guys like Lubo, JMFJ, Hickey, etc... we seem to have enough offensively minded guys. We lack toughness, size and good defensive responsibility.
Who would be the best fit for us

Is there a highly rated "defensive" d-man in this draft? (its an honest question). I would think that a d-man like that wouldn't be rated lower just by the nature of his style.

Luke Schenn is the top rated defensive defenseman. Comparisons range from Chris Phillips with a mean streak or Adam Foote in his younger days.
After him the next highly rated shutdown dman would probably be Colten Teubert, a guy I like a lot.
Schenn had a big WJC which increased his stock. I think though come draft day he will drop a tad because teams will want the offensive upside that guys like Doughty, Pietrangelo, and Bogosian possess.

Yes. Doughty was by far the best defenseman overall at the WJC this last year. Pietrangelo is being compared to Pronger at 6'4 and many LGKers loved the physical side of Luke Schenn at the WJC and he was also Hickey's defensive partner. Bogosian is the highest ranked American defenseman listed at 6'2 and has trained with Ray Bourque and I think is also managed by Bobby Orr.

i remember in one of Woodlief's articles, he suggested that Pietrangelo may eventually turn out to have the highest upside of the three biggies vying for the top pick (Stamkos & Doughty).
I've seen Bogosian slotted #3, #4 and I think even lower on some scouting reports. I'd target bogosian if I could trade down for him. He has decent size, skates well, and has a reputation for being one of the toughest of the available d-men in the draft. I might even take him at #2 straight out.

The hockey news guy, Mark Seidel has consistently ranked Pietrangelo as the #2 prospect throughout this draft year. It's hard to ignore his size combined with his offensive production.
The Pronger comparisons seem strange, I don't think Pietrangelo has that mean streak that Pronger has displayed throghout his career. I don't think it is impossible to develop one as one's career goes on(see Zdeno Chara), but it would be nice to see him have one right now.
