About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. He's got 5 picks in the top 60. The rest will not be seen for at least 3-4 years.
Lets hope he lets Moulson, Boyle & Purcell replace
The only NHL defensemen that are signed are: Johnson, Visnovsky and Preissing...and Harrold, if you count him. The Kings seemingly have to sign a few defensemen (hopefully not Blake) one of them a top 4 for sure.
They may have to trade Cammalleri (or someone of real value) for a top 4 defenseman. It is doubtful that Hickey will be able to step in and play top 4 mintutes...then there's Piskula, Hersley, and perhaps Petiot, although I think his contract expires. Perhpas the Kings draft Doughty, Pietrangelo, or Schenn; any of who may be able to step in. Still, the Kings need a vet or 2 in place of Blake / Stuart.
__________________ Don't fire Crawford YET. If we fire him, we may get a coach that could elevate this team to 20th overall in the league...and we'd be screwed in the draft again. Let's take full advantage of Crawford's ability to get us Stamkos!!
The Kings couldn't possibly charge the fans any more for tickets but they sure as hell could spend more money on the team they put out on the ice. Wonder why the Kings didn't make the playoffs, they spent 10 million less than the competiton (Dallas, San Jose, Anaheim).
Keep Cammi. Keep Preissing. Fill the holes via free agency. This team needs a second line center, a decent goaltender and two more defensemen. Make it happen, spend to the cap or come out and say our owner is a cheapskate who'd rather the Kings sink to second place in a market that they had a forty year headstart on.

Indeed. A trade on draft day or a UFA, we're going to need some D.
It's the complete idiocy of the fans that allow the team to get away with this.
The Kings will spend somewhere between 40 and 42 million this year after jettisoning the remainder of Stuart and Modry's contracts. Why the hell didn't they spend this year?
I see you're ecstatic that they saved 10 million, why the hell didn't they put that money out on the ice.
They had a 50 million dollar payroll in 2000! They've raised ticket prices... but they've sunk the team by cutting the budget 20%.
I don't think we need a second line center. We have Handzus and Boyle for that. Heck, we could probably re-sign Derek Armstrong if we need depth.
What we really need is a defenseman like Bryce Salvador or Brian Campbell or maybe even trade Cammy and a prospect and a pick for a top defenseman.
Bernier will be here soon enough and Labarbera is fine for now. An extra goalie wouldn't hurt, but maybe Quick or Taylor could fill.
Our biggest need as evidenced by all the defensive breakdowns this season is defense, but I doubt any UFAs would want to sign here.
Bottom line: We will probably HAVE to trade some of our offensive depth for a stud defenseman in a blockbuster trade. (How about sending Cammy+ to Edmonton for Pitkanen+?)

I don't think we'll be drafting 10 players in the first 4 rounds. Those picks will be bundled up to move up in certain spots.

Lastly, do not trade Cammy for draft picks and/or prospects.
Obviously its still too early to tell, but I would bet that if he goes out and gets a #1a/1b center at the draft, than MC is going to be part of the deal.
BTW, our cap number for next season is sitting at $32M right now. We've got $22M to get 3 on Defense (Including Blake) and fill the holes that Nagy/Thornton/Willsie create.

Who, exactly, would you have liked to see them spend that money on? For THIS season?

Agreed. It's impractical for a number of reasons (cost, limited number of contracts). And there are some nice alternate options (trading up, trading for NHL players, trading into next year's loaded draft). It's currency.

Blake fits your needs on-paper, though not your hopes.
