"This time of year special teams are going to decide games," said Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who had a power-play goal and two assists Saturday. "LA is a little bit passive and it gives us more opportunity to handle the puck."
LA's defense is more than a little bit passive. That has been their major problem for most of the year and especially on the PK. They need to get up in the face of their opponents and cause turnovers.
I agree with Jovo. Watch the Red Wings PK. They are up in your face all the time pressuring and trying to force you to cough up the puck. The kings usually just stay in formation and try to block passing lanes. That's something that has bothered me for years.
Sully does pretty well at pressuring now, but the defensive system IS passive and Sully seems to be the only one pressuring the puck on the PK consistently. I wonder what Crawford's reasoning is for playing that type of PK when other teams are saying it gives them opportunities . . .
The Kings as a whole are a passive team on D. Unless they are playing the trap late in games the opposing team usually has a very easy time entering the zone PK or no PK. Our PK does give a lot of room to the other team but the Kings do a good job at keying on the QB of the PP. Also the shot blocking has been better this season. They do a good job at taking away shooting lanes.
The only players who don't give the defence a lot of time are Brown, Sully, and Giuliano.
Also while we are on specialty teams
The Kings PP is really slumping. Teams have been keying on Kopitar on the entries into the zone, so instead they give the puck to Cammy who has no business carrying the puck in. I've noticed whenever Cammy carries it in it comes right back out, where as Kopitar can at least get in and send it back to the point for a shot.
If think I remember Lubo saying that teams were scouting him and taking away his shooting lane, but he needs to move his feet and demand the puck. This whole game of catch between Kopitar and Cammy is ineffective and is really easy to defend against.
Just my 2 cents.

it's been a problem since dave tippett left for dallas.
The passivity has existed since Palffy ceased playing on the PK. No Belanger hasn't helped either. The stagnant "box" system has left the Kings the worst PK in the league for years. The horrid PK was blamed on Hardy and Van Boxmeer but inexplicably continues during the Crawford regime. Perhaps it is simply an admission that the Kings just don't have the players to be aggressive when a man down.

Tippet handled the a pp.
It went down hill once they let Boucher walk to Dallas. They thought Corvo could have replaced Boucher's grit, toughness, meanness and shot. They still haven't recovered from that fiasco. I blame TL.
In '01-'02 they had the best special teams in the league. I think they were #1 on pp & #3 on pk.
