Maybe he's heading to Manchester for their playoff run?
It seems that wings fans arent to happy about this move.
"Matt Ellis, one of the most popular players in Grand Rapids Griffin history, has been claimed by the LA Kings. Don’t be swayed too much by his popularity in GR. Only a reference point, but one to keep in mind when you consider the type of character guy Ken Holland let walk, and the player he kept in his place: Mark Hartigan."

According to people over at LGW (letsgowings.com) this was done since today on Mlive Babcock said they were going to be announcing soon that they are bringing back Darren McCarty to the Wings from Grand Rapids. I am glad to see this happen since he is an upgrade over Downie and Dallas Drake
Just because we claimed him doesn't mean anyone else is interested.
what if Detroit waived him with the intention of sending him to the minors?
if no other team put a claim in and the Kings attempted to send him to Manchester, they would have to waive him again and the Red Wings can then re-claim him and immediately send him down because he will have then been considered having cleared waivers.
the Kings did this to Jeff Cowan last season... ask dano if they thought he was going to be picked up or their intentions were to send him to Manchester.
