About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. I read where Jason Smith is going to be a UFA-he is exactly what we need on the blueline and then some.
Question is-
What do you think he'
This is exactly the type of character guy I am hoping DL wants bad enough to get.
Let's not kid ourselves, the Kings will only do just a little better (if any better) next season. But guys like smith will give or young guys a ton of tools for the future.
He is worth the investment of 3.75 - 4 mil over two years. He would want an NTC and I would be inclined to give it to him.
I really doubt he comes here. He knows the odds of winning and he would really have to embrace the role of mentor, rather than the roll of mentor and contributor to a playoff/Cup contender.
You just know this is the type of player teams like San Jo would love to get.
I have been saiyng Jason Smith for endless. He is exactly what we need, gritty, big and a real leader on the blueline. He could be our captain for years to come. He would probably command 4.5 a year and we would probably need to sign him for at least 2-3 years so that he has some kind of security. I would want Commadore too, but we just need to get this Cammy for Suter deal done!! I wonder what does Nashville really want for him. Cammy and a high 2nd for Suter and a 3rd??? If I were DL I'd do it. We need someone else in his age range that can hit and and pair with Johnson and Hickey for years to come. If we could sign Smith or Commadore in the offseason it would be a huge boost to our D.
Potential:
Blake/Johnson
Suter/Lubo
Pressing/Smith or Commadore
With Harrold, Hickey, Piskula, Petiot in the wings and maybe Bosigian or Pieterangelo, if no Stamkos of course !!
This is where I wish we were a Detroit or New Jersey. Credibility as a winner goes a long way. On that same note that is what Dean is trying to do with this organization. The Cloutier thing hurts us but, I imagine Dan just wants his buyout and is trying to leverage the team.
Getting back on topic though. Smith would be exactly what we need. However it isn't going to happen. The only chance we have is if we are in fact able to get a Commodore and convince the two of them to sign at the same time. If that happens Blake is out of the picture.

Right. We've got to build from within first, become a perennial playoff competitor as a result and then the top UFA's will come. Until then... it's the Calder's and Handzus' of the world to bridge the cap.
If you want big, scrappy guys on the blue line - they are available in this draft. DL needs to hit a home run with a couple top D draft picks and/or a trade involving D like the type Nashville has on their blue line in that 25 and under age category as it'll take a few years for draft picks to be top contributers in the NHL.
We get to the playoffs again when those empty boxes DL had on his 25 and under D spreadsheet are filled with talent brought up through the organization (either by draft or trades for young defensive prospects that can still have the "kings logo tattooed on their butts". Until then, it's a bottom-dweller team no top-tier UFA will play for.
