The Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon non-parametric rank sum test suggests that that distribution would only occur randomly 4.85% of the time, so, we can be about 95% sure that there is a correlation between the independent variable (number of fighting majors) and the dependent variable (playoff status).
that said, # of fighting majors isn't really an independent variable since both teams get one in any given situation, but, that's what non-parametric tests are for.
Also interesting to note is that Detroit/Ottawa are PP Powerhouses, and I don't know where Montreal sits in terms of their PP
Edit: Just checked NHL.com
MTL is ranked #1 and Ottawa hasn't been as strong but when they're healthy you know they are.
just a reason they don't need to fight, they make the team pay by scoring
Agreed. Theres not too many teams that have that kind of power that allows them to play a pure skilled game. On that same note though-while a team can get away with that style in regular season there is no way in hell they can in PostSeason. I predict the Ducks to repeat and face Minnesota in the Western Finals. I dont think there are any teams in the east sans the Rangers that can matchup physically to the top Western Teams.

we should really revisit this at the end of the season. some of those bottom 15ers can jump into the playoffs over some of those top 15ers, rendering a little closer to even split (9-7).
i'd be interested to see the hit rankings done like this because fighting pretty much means dick in the post-season.

Though off-topic to the thread I think that the East will be a tougher opponent come the Finals for reasons beyond physical size and toughness. Looking at the west vs east: The West is much more physical and tough and will push for more legnthy series: ie. anaheim will have to beat at least 2 of Detroit, Dallas, San Jose or Calgary all of which are physical and will force 6-7 game series. That in itself will make them more tired and create a wear and breakdown on a West Coast team that the East (Ottawa/Montreal/Pittsburgh) won't have to go through. The East will be very fresh after sweeping the weaker teams. How much will that play a factor who knows, but I think it'll be a closer SCF series then it should be.

fi the playoffs started today, Minnesota would face Calgary in the first round and the Flames have more fighting majors than the Wild

The Wild also added Chris Simon at the trade deadline, they already have Fedoruk, Boogard, and Voros. The point being this years Wild team is much better built for the playoffs then last years.
