I am with most on this board that would try to trade Squid for a Big mean defensive D-man, but what else would you do re: UFA and any other possible players to trade?
I would also try to trade Lubo before it his NTC kicks in. We have Hickey coming up and Johnson and Harrold whose offense is developing, but we don't have much in the way of big mean intimidating PLAY-OFF type defenders. Even if Lubo's game gets back to form next year, he still isn't anyone that strikes fear in the heart of forcheckers like you need in the play-offs. I would try to trade him for a Komisarik or M. Staal type.
I would also love to see a Squid and Dallas pick for Atlanta's pick a Exelby trade.
I would go hard after Ryan Malone and Brooks Orpik. They both address team needs as far as size, grit, and overall team defense.
This is what I would try for:
Draft Bogosian and Schenn or Filatov
Brown/Kopitar/O'Sullivan
Malone/Boyle/Frolov
Calder/Handzus/Purcell
Ivanans or call-up/Armstrong/Ellis
Staal/Orpik
Blake/Johnson
Exelby/Harrold
Feel free to dis my ideas but at least add your own.

How many big, mean, defensive D-men does Detroit ice on a nightly basis?
Size and an angry disposition are so ridiculously overrated around here that it's laughable.
No team in the league had a bigger or meaner blueline than Calgary and they were tossed in the first round for the third year in a row.
What this team needs is to have 6 d-men who can be positionally sound and make the correct play under pressure. Size is nice but Detroit, Dallas and Pittsburgh are showing the world that you don't need to ice 3 Jim Vandeermeers every night to win in the Playoffs.
I'd try to sign a couple veteran stay at home dmen like Salvador, Montador, Commodore or Orpik. I think we could use some veteran experience on the 3rd and 4th lines as well, someone like Donovan would be ideal.

Good point, but I also think Detroit hasn't had to rely on a big mean defense so far because they have played Nashville and a banged up Colorado team. Let's see how well they fare against Dallas and revisit this subject.
BTW, I WANT Detroit to win, but I think that defense we both speak of will come back to haunt them in the form of Dallas' blueline.

I HIGHLY doubt that blueline was the reason they got tossed. After Iginla and Langkow the forwards get awfully streaky.

I agree with all this and don't think we need 3. I just think right now we have zero. As JJs game rounds out maybe he'll develop more of physical side, but right now...I really think we could use a guy like Orpik and maybe even an Exelby too. I think based on team needs Lubo is becoming more expendable and could bring in someone that could help the team more.
BTW, Dallas Does have a big tough Blueline. I disagree with you on that one. And we'll see how Pitt fares against Philly's blueline.
