Granted if we dont end up with the #1 overall what about Pietrangelo?? I know Doughty is rated at #2 on a lot of draft rankings but this guy is big, has offensive upside, and can be a shutdown defenseman. This article has in it that his nickname is Prongstrom.
At 6’4”, 211 lbs, Alex is an imposing presence. He has the ability to dominate the game with his physical style of play and his body checking ability which he has improved on since making his OHL debut in the fall of 2006. Opposing forwards keep their heads up when going into the corner with this guy. He’s a hard-hitting D man who is almost never out of position.
Has tremendous shut-down ability playing against top offensive players. Has huge offensive upside, with a great hard shot. Some scouts think he may pass a little too much, when he could shoot himself. Always among the OHL league leaders in both ice time and plus/minus, may have won the plus/minus race in his rookie year if not for a late season injury. Thrives under the pressure of big games and plays his best when the game is on the line.

I would be happy with Pietrangelo, Doughty, or Schenn just so long as we make the moves necessary to compete next season. That means adding some grit in the ranks, especially on D, making sure our goaltending is set and ready to go before the season i.e. a number 1 and number 2 goaltender is declared, and aging forwards are released and more producing mentors are brought in or identified. Also players like Handzus need some fire under their asses to get healthy and perform this offseason.
Man, I've been over listening to too many of my wife's entertainment shows. I was thinking this was going to be a post about some crazy 3 way trade deal where we traded down in the draft and used our spot somehow to get Rick DiPietro in goal and Angelo Esposito. It is LGK, afterall.

Alex has been used in shootouts and won a game in Ottawa this year as the only scorer in the shootout. We saw a preview of him in a shootout in Minor Midget during the OHL cup while playing with the Junior Canadiens. Alex scored the game winner on a penalty shot.
Alex has exceptional feet for a big man, getting around him on a 1 on 1 is a humongous chore. His stick is almost always in the proper position and his reach is huge. He takes proper angles into his check and has really improved on his reads and positioning, he seldom makes mental mistakes.
Moving the puck seems to come natural to the big D man. His passes are hard and on the tape. He makes great reads and decisions on where to go with the puck, his on ice vision and head for the game is top notch. On a Niagara power play that seems lost at times, he seems to be able to slow it down and bring a sense of organization to it. He looks off defenders with great head fakes, does a good job of getting both passes through seems to back doors and shots to the net.
Pietrangelo’s gap control is up with the best in the draft. His skating is so effortless he almost looks lazy at times. He almost teases approaching forwards into a false sense of security before quickly separating them from the puck.
We see Alex as a 2008 NHL Draft prospect with one of the biggest upsides. When you have a D man with his size, skating ability, smarts and then add on the fact that he is future Captain Material, it is going to be tough for too many NHL teams to pass on him in June.
He is a Maple Leaf fan, Bettman will make sure he goes to the Leafs.
....right, every highly ranked OHL kid will end up on the Leafs. I can see it now, Bettman announcing the draft lottery results and the Leafs somehow ending up with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall picks to get Stamkos, Doughty, and Pietrangelo.
I honestly think that if we do get the first, we talk to Toronto and fleece them for their first from next year as well in order for them to draft Stamkos.
Nothing would help that franchise get back on track faster than drafting Stamkos. It would do wonders for PR, even if they had to give up their first from next year as well.
