About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. If Stamkos turns out to be like a Spezza or St. Louis and Doughty becomes another Pronger, Stevens or Phanuef type of player, who would you rather have?

I'd rather not have another thread debating the pro's or con's of drafting Stamkos, Schenn or Doughty. There are plenty of other threads debating these issues.
Seeing that the Kings need a young second line center behind Kopitar and also need to show Kings fans that they are serious about winning,I would chose Stamkos. What DL may do is use Dallas's 1st rd. pick and the second round picks to move up in the top 5 to hopefully grab Doughty or Schenn with that pick.

that would take a miracle of sorts, but would be beautiful.. I really love Phanuef's style and having something close to that would be great in those conference games with the Ducks, Sharks etc... Johnson I don't picture ever becoming as nasty as most of LGKer's are envisioning. But getting Army the hell of the 2nd unit would be huge.
Of course that's if the Kings get the 1st overall pick. If the Kings end up with the 2nd or 3rd pick I could see DL trading down a couple of spots thinking he still could get Doughty or Schenn and also get a couple more prospects and/or picks for the 2009 Draft .

I would be happy with any of the three Stamkos, Doughty, or Schenn, but would expect that we take Stamkos if drafting in the #1 overall position. I can also see us grouping our picks to trade up for Schenn. He is a solid physical shutdown defensemen and he also has been Hickey's defense partner for the past couple of Canadian juniors events. As a pairing, they were considered Team Canada's best defensive unit at the World Junior Championships even out-performing Doughty and Alzner. Although, I thought Doughty had a hell of a tounament.
O'sullivan is doing good as 2nd line center and we have enough young talented forwards,it's time to draft physical defenseman.I think we should trade down if we get #2 and draft Schenn,he's a lot better than Doughty defensively.
If Stamkos turns out to be like a Spezza or St. Louis and Doughty becomes another Pronger, Stevens or Phanuef type of player, who would you rather have?
Doughty's style is not like a Pronger, Stevens or Phaneuf. Doesn't own the size or shown the grit of those guys either.

O'Sully is better on wing. They need a 1a/1b type center. Stamkos would be ideal if they get the #1 pick. If they don't they'll have to trade for one.
The kings need a big defensive dman and Schenn would be perfect.
The question is, will either of those players be ready to make the jump into the NHL?

A Scott Stevens type of player is exactly what this franchise needs. A player that will set the tone physically and do whatever it takes to win. As far as Doughty is concerned, I've heard some great things about him. Elite skater, great Hockey sense, great passing and of lots offensive ability. He's listed at 6'0" 213 lbs. Kinda reminds me of Stevens, but does he play an impressive physical game? Or is he more like a Niedermayer, Leetch, Lidstrom or Zubov? The lack of physicality on the blueline is a real problem in all levels of the organization. I like what I've heard about Schenn; a physically dominating, shut down D man. But I haven't seen him play other than a few shifts at the World Juniors.
Edit: Sorry. Didn't see the two previous posts. So, he doesn't play the physical style of a Stevens. Is he so good that DL cannot pass him over? With Lubo, Harrold, Preissing and Hickey (Johnson too) there are plenty of "puck moving" defensemen. Stamkos and Schenn it is! Cmon Deano, get another top 5 pick!
