5 freakin days and we would still be in position to get an impact center. Time to start campaigning to get a petition to the league to get him eligible THIS year. Well, one can hope and dream right? As much as I am deeply concerned about next year, I don't think we will be bad enough to have a really good shot at him. That begs the question, who can be a true #2 center. Zues: no, Army: no, Boyle: doubt it, Lewis: no way. That doesn't leave much. The UFA pool is not impressive at that position so a trade might be the only way to fiill this hole effectively. Maybe if the Sharks tank Marleau would be available after all those early rumors, but I dout that would happen since they are in the division. What do we do? Maybe moving Cammy or Sully is a temporary solution, but this is definately a "box" that needs to be filled. I know we need D-men BADLY, but we can't just ignore or deficiencies elsewhere.
If the NHL didn't bend the rules for Alex Ovechkin (missed the 2003 draft by two days), I wouldn't get your hopes up. As for the "petition to get Taveras in for 2009" thing, you're about six months late to the party.
And just for my own amusement, how different would the Kings be if Patrick Marleau were one day younger and thus not eligible for the 1997 Draft? Jokinen would have gone #2 to the Sharks. Who would the Kings have gone with at #3? I'm thinking it would have been Daniel Tkaczuk, but in a different world there's a slight chance that Roberto Luongo is a King (doubtful since Jamie Storr still had new car smell).
And if Jordan Staal were a week younger, Jack Johnson may very well be a Pittsburgh Penguin.
