About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Last night San Jose added some beef with the acquisition of Columbus' long time tough guy Jody Shelley - For a 6th round draft pick.
Considering Anaheim gave up a 2nd
Quite franklly a 6th rd pick seems about right considering Shelly will probably only dress in a handful of the Sharks remaining games and probably wont see any ice time at all if the Sharks get past the 2nd rd.
Shelly is a Rent a Cop no more no less who is ultimately one dimensional.
Using a little played 30+ year one dimensonal goon with no skills as a starting point for trade value compared to Kings players is ill conceived considering the Kings bargaining chips have a much higher skill set and will be much more sought after then Jody Shelly type skill sets.
That said-Willsie is only worth about a 5th or 6th rder IMO.

I think we tend to undervalue these grinders that only skate 5 minutes put put up big PIM. The 5 minutes that that guy sits in the box or the 2 he sits on a coincidental pair means one of your better players is still on the ice for regular duty, assuming that someone would have had to take on the enforcer's role. We look at these guys' +/- and PIM and ice time and all that, but do we ever look at the improvement in everyone else's productivity when these guys are the ones serving the obligatory time? Announcers will frequently talk about "that's a good trade" when they see a goon skating off for a couple minutes after goading a comparatively skilled opponent into taking a retaliation...not sure why that mindset doesn't carry over into people valuing these guys on their teams' rosters.
