About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Dean is adept at taking players that fall under the radar (Trevor Lewis, Wayne Simmonds) as well as adept at drafting college free agents (Piskula, Purcell).
So if Dean Lombardi
Dean is adept at taking players that fall under the radar (Trevor Lewis, Wayne Simmonds) as well as adept at drafting college free agents (Piskula, Purcell).
So if Dean Lombardi is so smart, don't you think he's already got an NHL-ready-defensive- prospect-who-is-ready-to-step-in already on his radar with the #25-29 selection? (pray for a Dallas slump, pray for a Dallas slump) -
This is admittedly a DEEP draft and there are LOTS of defensive prospects for the taking:
Doughty, Schenn, Pietrangeo and Bogosian will admittedly be gone, but here is ALSO who is ranked in the top 30!
Dean also will have the 31st pick (god willing) so its conceivable he could select TWO from the following:
Robak 6'3 - 202
Myers 6'7 - 200 (yes, that's 6-7 - imagine Myers and Boyle? Ouch!)
Carlson - 6'2 - 212
Teubert - 6'2 - 188
Del Zotto - 5'10 - 208
Volnov - 6'0 - 190
Ness - 5'9 - 157 (no thank you - we already have Lubo and Hickey)
Sbisa - 6'1 - 197

I'd rather have Stamkos + two defensive prospects rather than Doughty/Schenn/Pietrangelo/Bogosian + two defensive prospects, wouldn't you?
Here's hoping Dean doesn't disappoint already disappointed Kings fans.
The odds are in favor of the Kings not remaining in the #1 slot even if they finish last this year. So while you'd rather have Stamkos, it's likely that the Kings will never have a shot at drafting him.
I personally don't see how the Kings can screw up this draft with the scouting staff they now have in place and 3 picks in the first 32 selections.

It's going to be pretty hard to screw this draft up... I don't see how DL will "dissapoint" the fans... I think the fans will be happy... however, whether they see an immediate payoff or not is the question. I'm as sick of suffering as the next guy but I've also got the long-term in mind so I won't be "dissapointed" if Dean opts to pass on Stamkos as long as The Kings benefit. If he just straight takes someone else at #1, I don't care if they're the next Ray Bourque, I'm gonna be pretty ****ing livid.
When we asked Dean Lombardi the reasoning behind selecting the 58th ranked prospect 1st overall, he only had this quote to say.
"This guy, he's gonna want it more. We tried to trade down, but we heard rumors that someone around 10th had him reasonably high on the draft board too. We got our guy."

i don't have the direct quote, but afterwards Dean implied that his suspicion about the rumor proved correct and said that Boston was going to take him.
It's very rare that a defenseman sticks immediately after being drafted. The only guy I can think that did in recent years was Jay Bouwmeester and he was thrown to the wolves. Vlasic sticking in San Jose at age 19 was pretty remarkable. Brent Burns perhaps, but he played sparingly for Minnesota and usually as a forward his rookie year. I wouldn't hold my breath on any drafted D playing full time with the Kings next year. I would not be terribly surprised if DL spun a pick (or three) to land a defenseman from another team.

I remember a similar quote, that team at #8 was supposed to take him. And that was Boston, as I see.
