If/When we draft Stamkos would it be advantageous to keep him in the minors for one more year despite the fact that he is nhl ready? The year following crosby's draft the N.H.L. was in lock-out and he was forced to play down in the minors ( the Q I think )
He even said that that was to his advantage. I personally don't understand the logic of "the longer you keep a player away from the big club the better he will be when he gets there" philosophy, but does the fact that you are N.H.L ready mean that you have to go right to the N.H.L? If the A.H.L. is suppost to make Bernier better then he could be if he skipped the A.H.L. then why would'nt it work in the favor of a player that is N.H.L. ready ???
He'll probably be in the NHL assuming he has a strong training camp. Kane went right from the OHL to the NHL, for example.
Stamkos would bypass the AHL if the Kings feel that his growth could not be significantly improved by cutting his teeth in the AHL first. (Kopitar didn't spend any time in the AHL either.)

For character reasons, make the assumption that he'll be in the minors (and make him aware of this). Then see how he does in camp, and be open to starting him in the NHL if he's ready for it both in terms of skill and maturity. This is exactly the way it went down with Kopitar.
It all depends on Stamkos' age. I don't remember the exact requirements but in Bernier's case for instance, he would've had to spend the entire season in the NHL or be returned to his junior team. He was ineligible for the AHL. Stamkos will probably be in that situation as well after he's drafted. He'll either be NHL ready or be sent back to Juniors.
I think it's so they don't poach players from the CHL. I'm guessing many junior players if offered would take professional contracts from an AHL team rather than play for a stipend in juniors.
It would behoove the kings to keep him down in the minors for his second contract to come later. Means Jr's for the first year at least. Just to delay free agency.
The question is can we keep him off the roster even that long.
As long as Stamkos doesn't follow the Lauri Tukonen career path I think the Kings will be in good shape whether he plays in the NHL next year or spends one more year in Juniors....
