This is an ode to a team in LA
In 40+ years, they just can’t find their way
If the past predicts the future, lost they will stay
Their hope rides on a GM from San Jose
Who claims that better days are not far away
But for now the Kings suck
With or without the puck
Worse than any other team
Yet the GM says things aren’t as bad as they seem
We’ve got loads of youngsters, and not much else
A captain who leads like it’s everyman for himself
A goalie who’s great in the minor leagues
Too bad he’s fat, and prone to fatigue
So we sit and wait for Bernier to bloom
With Dan Cloutier around, it can’t happen too soon
We still have Cammi, we still have Fro
who some want to stay, others want to go
These are players who we can’t replace
Do you really want to see more Armstrong for heavens sake?
There’s Calder, who’s an average hockey player at best
Raitis Ivanans, who should just stick to bench press
Thankfully we have Patrick O’Sullivan
And Dustin Brown, who’s turned into da man
We got Jack Johnson, who’s yet to earn his nickname
Lubomir Visnovsky, who’s just not the same
But of these players, I’m still a big fan
Lord knows I’d rather watch them than Kevin Dallman
Last but not least, there’s the Kings shining star
Thank god and all hail, the great Anze Kopitar
There’s no doubt about it, Crawford’s a hack
Sorry to say it, but that’s a fact
But for some reason, the GM stands by him
Mistakes like that should be a cardinal sin
I question his judgement, I question his mind
And will continue to do so, as long as the Kings lag behind
We could have had Alzner, instead we have Hickey
Everyone says that drafting is tricky
So we look ahead to picking Stamkos
But with DL in charge, anything goes
Stamkos will most likely land with another team
And once again, we’ll hear that things aren’t as bad as they seem
All we want is a team that’s strong
Instead we wind up back at the beginning of this song.
Nope, but maybe the 1979 will give you a hint
Well, karma to you for writing a song. The fact that you're 28~ and qouting the Rock is rather frightening.
In a 5 year plan, you want to have a cup contending team in 5 years.
That doesn't mean you play poorly for four, and then suddenly are in the top tier of the league in the last year. You gradually get better each year. Not only do you have to be better compared to yourself, you have to be better than the teams in your division at least, considering how division heavy the schedule is right now. (Although that may not be the case in the future.)
Even with our rebuild, every team has surpassed us so far in building for THEIR future as well. Sure we may have better players next year through free agency, and our younger players may get better next season. But guess what? So will every other team we play.
Dallas got a young stud in Richards - a younger franchise two-way player, and a couple young players that have successfully taken the torch from Mike Modano's era. Niskanen and Ribiero are underrated players. People thought they were gonna fall flat this year and they didn't. Want to know why? A bunch of nobody young players took the team and won some games for them.
San Jose already has a all-league center. Possibly even TWO franchise centers. Will most likely re-sign a whopper contract to a top 2 pairing defenseman who is also young. Still continues to have a young core that is attaining playoff experience that our players haven't.
Anaheim has Getzlaf and Perry. Two young all-stars and impact players. AND they still have Bobby Ryan waiting on the wings. AND they will have a lottery pick this year as well.
Phoenix has a whole slew of young players that are stepping into spotlight positions. Mueller is playing very very well. Bryzgalov will tend the net for years to come. Their veterans are playing like veterans should and lead the way. Shane Doan is playing some gritty hockey, and inspired. Ed J is playing some great puck-moving defense for an older player too.
Guess what everybody. Slow rebuilds work in the NHL, but not in the Pacific. Every team in our division gets better - and younger, every year. There are no poorly run organizations in our division. They all have a brilliant mix of veterans and young players. None of these teams will fall off the face of the earth anytime soon, and will continue to get better. If something drastic isn't done, the Kings will continue to be floundering at the bottom of the division every year and little will change. It is my opinion that Dean Lombardi does not acknowledge this truth.
