What exactly was Lombardi supposed to do today? Willsie has trouble playing regularly for the worst team in the league. Do you really see teams lining up to give up valuable assets for him? Thornton had a no-trade clause (which was freaking stupid but even if he didn't, he's another one who has trouble playing on a regular basis for the worst team in the league), Blake had a no-trade clause. The only players Lombardi had that he could have gotten valuable assets for are guys that he's trying to build the team around. Should he have traded guys like Frolov or Johnson just to do something?
I've seen people complaining about Lombardi just adding draft picks and saying things like "How many draft picks do you need?". The sheer number of draft picks Lombardi has this year gives him options. 10 picks in the 1st 4 rounds will give Lombardi the chance to combine them and trade for either better picks or players.
This is what he is being paid money for. He made the best out of the Avery situation. He made a guy with no trade value at the beginning of the season, and we got a decent prospect in Cliche, Marek (a pick for not signing) and a roster player in Jason Ward. These are the deals we all hope for. Granted, you cant get steals from every trade.
JMFJ and irish are a few more examples. Not every trade can give you that awesome prospect that is ready to crack the NHL lineup. Is it a bit unrealistic of me to suggest that every trade results in a quality prospect coming back. These are the things that we hope for. I'd rather have a player that is a year or two from playing than 3 or 4 years from playing.
I think the real lesson learned out of this whole Blake thing is DO NOT GIVE A NTC during a rebuild. I would have loved for Blake to really step up and help the organization. Do something like Tkachuk did when being traded to the Thrashers. Be a rental, and return to the team when hes UFA. That is what a real captain would do. Not say "i want to be surfing in April. I want to remain a king." He is not helping this team right now.

Other than Stuart, which tradeable assets did Lombardi not move today?
Dana,
You seem to be stuck on who DL could have traded. That's not the issue I have with his moves.
The concern I am expressing is what we got from his moves. Could we have gotten a prospect or two from the trades we made instead of just receiving draft choices.
Could Stuart have been traded for a prospect + lower pick (or 2009 pick)?
Modry for a prospect?
Maybe Lombardi's plan is to combine some of the 10 picks he has in the 1st 4 rounds to either move up for better picks or to get players. I'd be surprised if Lombardi actually drafts 10 players in the 1st 4 rounds when the draft comes around.
Exactly. This is what I have thought he was going to do for a long time. I expect to see several of those pick being package deals come draft day. So the guys that are here now may still be gone soon enough. If DL doesn't do this then I have lost all faith in having a playoff ready team in 2 years or less.
Just curious....How many picks (by round) do the Kings have in 08 draft???
Also, isnt this supposed to be the deepest draft in 10 years???
And, lastly, what did everyone expect to get (or lose) at the trade deadline?
Round 1: 2 picks (LA, DAL)
Round 2: 4 picks (LA, VAN, DET, CAL)
Round 3: 3 picks (LA, PHI, Conditional Pick from NYR for not signing Marek)
Round 4: 2 picks (VAN, DAL)
Round 5: 1 pick (LA)
Round 6: 1 pick (LA)
Round 7: 2 picks (LA, ANA)
I expected to get some prospects. I also expected more trades coming from a team that has been out of the race since December. Modry, Stuart (two of our best defesemen this season), and a backup goalie for 4 picks. Not what i had in mind.
Dean Lombardi most cetrainly did NOT hurt the Los Angeles Kings today... i promise!
Its not a matter of what DL did today. Its what the other 4 gm's did that i think really hurt us. The other 4 teams are getting better while still being competitive. We are still on rebuildy mountain. Granted, we have come a long way, but we are still far from being competitive in our division, let alone the conference.

will everyone save all their negative posts and revisit them if he comes strong at the draft... you know, HIS Christmas?
you are either in it or not. he is building this team... building it HIS way.
not one player 25 or under was moved in an unnecessary deal today or in a deal to facilitate the ability to move someone else.
In the summer I took a lot of flak from some people on here by saying this team is still 4 - 5 seasons away from being a playoff contender. More than ever I stand by those words.
Bernier is still another season away, at best. Stick to the plan and DO NOT let him suffer at the hands of next seasons repeat of suckage on this club.
The way I see it, at the end of the season the only true NHL CALIBRE players on defense will be Visnovsky and Preissing. Yeah , yeah Johnson BLAH BLAH BLAH. He was a rookie this year. Next season will be his sophomore slump. That makes it the following season before he makes the true leap. Its just how it usually works, so thats how I plan. After those two, the majority of the 'in the pipeline' D has limited or no NHL games. This scares me because I have the feeling Lombardi is going the hit the panic button again this off-season and sign 2 or more overpriced 'veteran' defensemen cast aways. Lets hope he's learned from his mistakes.
Which leaves Lombardi in almost the same exact position he was in when he started nearly 2 seasons ago - Mediocre goaltending and a porous defense.
Next year will suck. Again.
But hey! How about that 09/10 season?? Be the first on your block to witness the 4 game round one sweep!! Kings are taking downpayments right now for season tickets!!! Operators are standing by!

You could have stopped right there. That's when I did.
