Earlier tonight, I attended the Seattle Thunderbirds season finale where they once again defeated their arch-rival Everett SilverTips 5-2. Future King Bud Holloway kicked started the route with his 43rd goal on a sick short-handed breakaway in the 1st period. :-)
At first, I was disappointed to learn that they had chosen to rest Kings blue-chip prospect, Thomas Hickey. However, I soon found myself presented with an opportunity to chat with him and get his thoughts on his future with the Kings and the upcoming draft.
At the end of the first period, my son and I headed up from our seats directly behind the Thunderbird bench to grab some snacks. While walking up the aisle, I noticed that the section immediately next to ours was empty except for a lone young man sitting in a business suit. Sure enough! It was Hickey hanging back and watching over the gear of fellow players that we not playing.
Not one to miss an opportunity, I walked over to where he was sitting and asked if he would mind if I could take a picture of him with my son. Hickey was more than gracious, got up, asked me my son's name and then bent down to shake his hand saying "Hi Jackson, I'm Thomas, very nice to meet you!" I then took a quick snapshot with my phone:
After the picture, I told him how we're looking forward to seeing him in a Kings uniform in the near future. I then asked if there was anyone in particular he hoped the Kings would select in this year's draft and he said one word...
wait for it...
you know its coming...
stay on target...
stay on target...
SCCCCCCHHHHHEEEEEENNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!
Not that it is really a surprise but Hickey feels they have great on-ice chemistry and played well together whenever they were partnered in the past, both at the under 18s and, of course, at the WJC's this year.
When I pointed out that Schenn could keep an eye on things on the back end and let him roam, you could just see his eyes light up at the very thought.
If we get first overall, take Stamkos and then some way, some how, use the Dallas pick + 2nd rounder/prospects, etc. to trade up and grab Schenn just before Anaheim can select him with the EDM pick.
DO IT DEANO!

...if you're going to take a defenseman, you dont take the one your 19 year old WHL prospect that has never seen NHL acton asks you to, you take the one best suited to help your team in the future.
I'm telling you people, if the Kings take anyone on D aside from Doughty (or maybe Pieterangelo) you'll all be wanting Dean's scalp in 2-3 years. Put it in your sigs. Schenn will be a solid, tough player for a long time to come.
You do not pass on a guy like Doughty, and you take Pieterangelo if you really, truly feel that his upside is as high as they say it is.

...and you also don't take the one some message board poster tells you to take.
I'm telling you, DL and his scouting staff will have their pow-wow and choose whoever they want to, despite what you, the thousands of other Kings fans, and various scouting and media services say.

yup, NO ONE one this message board expected hickey, everyone wanted voracek and cherepanov, but DL took someone completely off the board early in the 1st round, NO ONE suspected that, and it seems to be the better choice between him and Alzner( from potential and current talent)

Someday I'd love to hear an interview from one of DL's amateur scouts that details what all goes in to selecting a player. I'm sure it'd be really interesting. Far more analysis than any of us could ever do for sure.
I'd love to hear from someone who has worked for other GM's who can contrast the difference. Everything I've read would seem to indicate that DL's scouting staff must work their tails off to keep up with what DL expects to get in terms of feedback and analysis on players.
