although no mention of Zatkoff damnit...
These playoffs -- especially this first series against a team like Providence -- have huge repercussions for the Kings. If he dominates, he makes a case for a short stay in the AHL. And looking at the difference a kid like Price made...
I really like his eagerness to join the Kings, he really wants to be in the NHL. Going to be a great camp for Goalies.
"Well, I probably can answer that question after the playoffs, if I think I'm ready to step up," he said. "If I play well here and we go far in the playoffs, I'll have more right to say something if they send me down."
It's really saying something that a team with zero veterans like Manchester's could even make the playoffs. It'll be a huge task to advance, but if they do, that'll really speak volumes about the young prospects we do have in the AHL. It's invaluable experience.

Interesting you say this. Maybe you or someone could add to this a bit?
I have absolutely no feel for what the AHL is about or what it takes to win at that level. To be perfectly honest, I thought most teams were young guys trying to crack the NHL. I only follow the players and that is from what I read or hear. In other words, I have only seen the Monarchs play about three times in the last 5 years...if I am luckey. I have only watched maybe 10 games total in that time frame.
So, what is the consensus on the Monarchs. Are the writers impressed? Are they talking about the youth? Are they better than expected?

The AHL is the second best hockey league in the world.
No ifs, ands, or buts. It is better hockey than the RSL, SEL, et al.
Watching most games from all European leagues is like watching paint dry. I was trying to watch an RSL game this morning and almost fell asleep from boredom. Then I put on an SEL game and i DID fall asleep.
Calder Cup is by far the second most grueling and exciting race for a trophy in professional hockey.

and addressing the youth...
The Monarchs have only 4 players over the age of 24 and only one player over the age of 25.
The Providence Bruins by contrast have 11 players over the age of 24 and 7 players over the age of 25.
Does the Kings have any players that can be sent down to Manchester to help lead the way that does not have to clear waivers? :P It is pretty cheap but couldn't they send someone like Sully down to pwn everyone? I don't think he has to enter waivers yet although he is playing for Team USA... What about Kopitar? All of these young like 20 year olds, do we have anyone that doesn't need to clear waivers? Hell, send Thornton, Willsie, Klemm etc... Their contracts are up anyway, throw them through waivers gogogo...

That rebuilding of the whole organization from top to bottom must not be going too well.

It's almost unheard of for a team that young to make it far in the AHL playoffs. The Monarchs average age is 22.5. It has been done, but it's certainly rare:
Obviously Bernier (assuming that's who they go with in the first round) will have to throw the team on his back to advance, but it is possible. Roy and Price both took their teams to the Calder Cup at age 19 - but for Bernier to do it with such a young team? That'd be something special for sure.
