Let's be clear, those players have always been intended as fillers (until the kids are ready) and nothing more. Preissing, Calder and Handzus were signed merely to appease upper management and give them the impression DL intended to remain somewhat competitive while rebuilding the team. I doubt DL looked at any of those guys and thought "wow, they'll really help get us to the promise land" It was more like "That outta keep those bastards off my ass for a year or two".
You remember what the Wings looked like when they handed the reigns to this prospect called Steve Yzerman?
You remember all those s***ty Nordiques teams?
How 'bout them Ducks 5 seasons ago?
You build perennial powerhouses by first building depth. Depth of prospects and depth of picks. Once that's done, you have a wealth of currency and hopefully a few core guys to build around that you didn't have to give up anything to get.
At that point, it's a revolving door. Call up the next prospect to replace the vet who gets you the pick which turns into the next prospect. The team seriously contends season after season, and the serious chances for the Cup start to come time after time.
And whatever you're missing, well, you've got all these prospects and pick you can use to get what you need.
OR
You could go the way the Kings have gone for the last 40 years - trade your assets and screw the depth 'cause the goal is to win NOW (or save the team from bankruptcy).
And when Palffy and Deadmarsh and Allison all break down or go wherever it is they go, you're left with Brad Chartrand and Trent Klatt and Steve Heinze and Derek Armstrong as your first line center for two seasons while you get the next Pavol Demitra and Jeremy Roenick.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. This pretty much sums it all up. Something obviously wasn't working for the last 40 years so something needed to change.
Am I the only one who is sick and tired of hearing about how we're going to be good in "the future"?
Yes.
No.
Last season showed some promise, but they're just as bad if not worse this year. Next year will be year 3 of the DL regime (& last of Cloutier!), so will the DL supporters be content to fight for the 12th west conf spot instead of just being dead last in the league? (I can already see the LGK threads in Jan 09: "don't win any more games - keep the top 5 draft spot")
At the rate this team is "improving," DL years 3 & 4 are already shot.
I'm so sick of hearing about "potential" and the "future." When is potential going to mean anything on the scoreboard?
The Flyers won 22 games last year, this year they're heading for the playoffs.
The Kings won 27 games last year, this year they might win 29. Wow.
When does the future start? 08-09? 09-10? later? I'm just soooo tired of ****** hockey in L.A.
Why do people compare the Flyers situation to ours? They had the youthful assets in place just needed the right vets and goalie, much easier for the Flyers to sign high profile FA than it is for the Kings right now.Be patient DL will turn our prospects/picks into impact players when we are ready to contend for a playoff spot.Look at our cross town rival, they sucked for years and acquired plenty of young studs.Do you think the Ducks would be contenders without Pronger? How did they get Pronger? They traded Lupul(7th)overall Smid(9th)and picks for him to put them over the top, can't make a trade like that without having Ryan,Getzlaf,Perry,Mitera,Penner etc.
