I know in the NHL you use to be able to have tape on the hand & the wrist but nothing across the knuckles. I have no clue if the rule changed or if Simmonds had tape on his knuckles.

From the AHL rule book, even though he's never played there:
"Any player or goalkeeper wearing tape or any other material on his hands (below the wrist) who cuts or injures an opponent during an altercation will receive a match penalty in addition to any other penalties imposed including for fighting under this rule, unless such player's opponent is identified as the instigator."
1. A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts or who deliberately injures an opponent and the circumstances shall be reported to the Commissioner for further action. A substitute for the penalized player shall be permitted at the end of the fifth minute.
A match penalty can be assessed for the following infractions: (a bunch of stuff followed by)

Safe to assume he had intent to injure.....I don't think Simmonds taping his hands had anything to do with intent to injure. Then again, could have been foil!

lol no it just reminded me.. the tape rule has been in hockey forever.. even if you are playing with a broken finger and have gauze and paper tape or whatever you'd get ejected..
