Ersberg will cost the Kings Stamkos, then he will sign somewhere else where he will backstop his team to the cup.
Down the road, the Kings resulting draft pick will be a bust.
Stamkos will also lead his team to the cup.
There will be much crying.
This needs another option like "Wait and see till the end of next season if Ersberg can establish himself and lead the team to a playoff run." It is way too early for these stupid questions. And the last place team hasn't been winning the #1 pick very much in the past.
If Ersberg ends up being a #1 type goalie that will always be >> than some forward. Especially for this franchise.
The schedule seems to be in the Kings favor though. We are playing tougher teams than Tampa. PLUS, Tampa and Atlanta are playing each other twice....a good chance for some 3 point games.
Whether Ersberg is greater than Stamkos is probably not the right question. It remains to be seen if one will be better than the other. There are many differences just based on the position they play that would have to be factored in somehow.
The more accurate question is which one is more important for the Kings to have right now...I would have to say based upon the Kings current need, Ersberg is more important. He is not a guarantee to be the second coming of Roy or Brodeur but he is currently in the process of proving that he can play as a steady #1 goalie.
As far as Stamkos goes, we have yet to see if he'll prove to be all he's hyped to be. He may or he may not. He most likely will be very good...but will he achieve the levels of success as AO, Syd the Kid, Gretzky, Bossy, etc. have through their careers or will he end up a Lindros? How many promising players have had shortened careers or unrealized greatness unrealized due to injury? Too many!
None of us knows...None of the GM's or coaches know either. They can make educated guesses and so can we, but the quality of those guesses will vary wildly.
Optimistically, we could end up with both of them.
I am not worried about the draft as much as solidifying our blueline corps. I have not seen, nor am I convinced that the current crew can get the job done. We need defensemen and were most likely not gonna get them "NHL ready" from the entry draft. We are gonna have to get them from internal development or through trades and FA. FA and internal development has not worked overly well for this organization (in the past) so I would think through a trade...is the most likely. But if we can get a Larry Murphy type of defenseman and keep him this time...I'd be extremely happy.
