Would you be willing, as an armchair GM, to trade our 1st rounder next year (by itself or + whatever else is needed), if it meant getting another high pick in this year's draft?
For example, let's take best case scenario. Let's say we win the lottery and we pick Stamkos. We make the trade above for either the 2nd or 3rd pick to get schenn or doughty or whatever d-man. And then we also are able to keep the Dallas 1st.
Do you make that trade?
Kings have been finishing near bottom of the standings lately so it might be very valuable to another GM hoping to land tavares...or is giving up our own shot at tavares too high of a price to pay for us? Thoughts?
Good post. I think if you can get the player or players you need now, you give up that shot at a lottery pick next year. I haven't heard about anybody of relevance other than Tavares for next year. I'm sure there are going to be others. I think after this draft we should hopefully have the young depth needed to be able to start adding the builders.

The 2009 draft is supposed to be just as deep as this year's if not deeper.
I'm not really in favor of trading our first rounder in 09, we don't even know how good we're going to be. With our goaltending situation still a huge question mark, it would be pretty dumb to trade away a potential top 5 pick.

I completely understand this but if the Kings are in the running for a top 5 pick NEXT YEAR there should be some serious consideration of who will be running the team. IMO, both GM and Coach (if he isn't already) should be out the door. Cellar dwelling should be OVER after this year....
I'd seriously consider this proposal if it were something the staff felt was in the best interest of the team. Meaning if they are pretty convinced a Stamkos and Doughty or whatever his name is are big time players then you do this...in a heartbeat.

I would trade it away just so there is no point in the Kings losing. No net. The only point in playing next season should be to make the playoffs. Our prospect pool is one of the best in the league and WILL be the best after this draft (8 picks in the 1st 3 rounds including one of the top 3).
The one thing this trade would do though is push the Kings Management to try to really improve this team (this year) so they do not end up with a top 10 pick next year. This would make the trade look really good.
IMHO it comes down to what happens with Cammi in the offseason and if the Kings can make a different move to get an additional 1st rounder in this draft.

erm, who do you see available via trade, free agency, or in the Kings own system that is going to move them out of the cellar for 08-09?
This organization is still trying to build a foundation. I dont see them being much betterthan any other team in the west next year that is missing the playoffs this season.

I agree with this. We should hopefully not be cellar dwelling for another year. The Coyotes turned in a better season with a youth movement, solid goaltending, and some over acheiving. We should be at least as good as the Coyotes are this year next season IMO.
