About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. Yeah, I think I'm keeping that 2009 1st round pick, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Dallas' 1st moved in a deal this year in a package that nets us
Yeah, I think I'm keeping that 2009 1st round pick, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Dallas' 1st moved in a deal this year in a package that nets us a top 4 defenseman in the 23-26 age range.
The one thing this trade would do though is push the Kings Management to try to really improve this team (this year) so they do not end up with a top 10 pick next year. This would make the trade look really good.
IMHO it comes down to what happens with Cammi in the offseason and if the Kings can make a different move to get an additional 1st rounder in this draft.
I think I would make the trade
I believe Florida had this same exact mind set when they dealt their 08 1st rounder for Tomas Vokoun. They got themselves a very capable replacement for Luongo but they still missed the Playoffs and now they have no 1st round pick.
Same with Edmonton, but at least they aren't striving for worst. I say if it gets us one of the top 4 d-guys this year... we aren't really losing out on anything. Unless we were to win the lottery. Then... Ooops.

Taylor Hall is not eligible until 2010.But players like Jared Cowen,Brayden Schenn,Scott Glennie,Landon Ferraro,Jimmy Bubnick,Matt Duchene,Jordan Schroeder,Toni Rajala,and Carter Ashton are...
For me, I say make the trade and I say so for this reason. The Kings right now have 31 wins and hopefully that is where we stay. That said, I easily see us having the capability to win anywhere between 8-12 more games next year. That would put us around 40 wins which at least for this year is good enough for a playoff spot. With some good acquisitions over the summer to shore up our defense, the maturity and growth of our youngsters and making a decisive decision about what to do in goal won't hurt this team. I firmly believe (or at least I hope) that by the trading deadline, we are buyers and the next step for us is to be battling for a playoff spot not hoping we lose games in order to firm up a lottery pick. Last season the Kings finished with 27 wins and as bad as we have been at times this season, we currently are 4 wins better. I see no reason for being worse or status quo this time next year and I would think the next maturation step is looking at finishing near that 7th or eight spot in the standings.
Why would the Kings trade an opportunity at a top 5 pick next year because if we go with the same defense we are going to suck yet again...We need a stud on defense(maybe DDoughty,LSchenn or ZBogosian) if we get one this year. Next year we will be not much better im thinking and could be in the running for the second pick next year ...won't Victor Hedman look good on the LA blueline for the next 15-20 years...If we win the lottery(2008) and DLombardi trades it he is stupider than I thought. If we get the second pick and trade down for an extra second rounder he is also stupider...I say make the pick and then gear up for Dallas' pick and if we can fandangle our way up the latter without having to give up too much,so be it...
Trading your #1 is something you do when you have one of the best records in the league, not the worst. You sacrifice it for a final-piece guy when you have a mature, talented roster with an honest shot at the cup. Not when it might be worth a top prospect in a deep draft.
I can see the Kings being a bottom-five team again next year -- there's not a lot of D help in the UFA pipeline and the Kings tend to get scooped with top UFAs anyway. But the goaltending might be a lot better, and all those young forwards will be entering their primes. This could very well enable the Kings to win two more games a month than this year, which would put them squarely in the playoffs. Either way, keep the pick -- to get a baby monster if you suck or get a Brian Campbell for the '09 playoffs if you don't.
Would you be willing, as an armchair GM, to trade our 1st rounder next year (by itself or + whatever else is needed), if it meant getting another high pick in this year's draft?
For example, let's take best case scenario. Let's say we win the lottery and we pick Stamkos. We make the trade above for either the 2nd or 3rd pick to get schenn or doughty or whatever d-man. And then we also are able to keep the Dallas 1st.
Do you make that trade?
Kings have been finishing near bottom of the standings lately so it might be very valuable to another GM hoping to land tavares...or is giving up our own shot at tavares too high of a price to pay for us? Thoughts?
Think about it.
Firstly Lombardi was hired mainly with the mindset he wouldn't make deals like this sacrificing a 1st round pick in future drafts. It goes against everything he said he wouldn't do.
#2 Any of the teams in the potential 2-4 spots ain't trading, in essence, down for 2 1st rounders in 09. The reality is the Kings should be a middle of the road team and today's potential #1 ends up being the 14th pick.
#3. Any of the 3 teams potentially in the mix, for sure would want a roster player, and it won't be Cammi. Start with Brown then move onto Frolov or Kopitar. With the real potential of the Kings finishing better there has to be some long term value sent the other way. They ain't taking Handjob.
#4 The fans would riot in the street if whoever was chosen in the Kings slot did anything while said defense prospect struggles at the NHL level or is still in Junior/College/minors.
#5 CBGBDB would type his fingers to the knuckle with endless posts about how much better the traded away pick in 09 is doing vs. the traded for pick in 08. And the cost of the added hardware to keep up with those endless threads and to keep the website up and running would bankrupt Rinkrat.

Just wanted to bring up a past Dean Lombardi trade. In November of 1997, he traded the Sharks first round pick to Colorado for Mike Ricci--the previous week, he had traded Viktor Kozlov for Florida's first rounder.
The Sharks had the 2nd worst record in the NHL in 1996-97 and were only one point away from being the worst. So it would seem kinda foolish to trade your first rounder when it could very well be a top pick again the following year and perhaps could have been Vinny Lecavalier. But the Sharks made some improvements that offseason, namely acquiring Mike Vernon to stabalize the goaltending position while their younger players started to mature. San Jose squeaked into the playoffs and their pick was 12th overall--Colorado drafted Alex Tanguay, so I'm sure they have no regrets about it either.
But I think this demonstrates that DL would be willing to trade the pick if he felt like the team was headed in the right direction. And the timing of that trade (November) allowed that trade to be made once he had a better feel for the team.
Obviously a 26 year old Mike Ricci is different than an 18 year old defenseman. But it's not as if the original poster's idea was trading the 2009 first round pick for a rental player.
The original poster was just saying asking if you would sacrifice your shot at Taveras/Hedman if it guarenteed you Doughty/Bosogian/Schenn? This is on top of already drafting Stamkos #1.
If I were in charge, I'd take a shot even knowing an 18 year old D isn't likely to help me right now. I imagine there aren't a lot of teams that willing to trade out, but this sort of trade has happened in somewhat recent memory.
In 1999, Brian Burke worked tirelessly to be in a position to draft both of the Sedins. In order to make this happen, he had to trade a young Bryan McCabe and a 2000 first rounder to Chicago for the 4th overall pick. The Canucks were the 2nd worst team in the league in 98/99, so they maybe were giving up another top 3 pick for the 2000 Draft. But Vancouver improved and Chicago ended up with the 11th overall pick in the 2000 Draft which they used on Pavel Vorobiev.
I think you'd have a harder time finding somebody to trade out of a top 5 spot this year as the top prospects in 1999 had some red flags (namely Stefan/Brendl, and those red flags ended up being justified).
Just to put out a "realistic" proposal, what if the Islanders (lowest scoring team in the NHL) offered the #5 pick for Cammalleri and the 2009 1st? And at #5, Bosogian/Schenn were both available. If you said no, I wouldn't blame you but I'd also consider the best case scenario where the Kings pick doesn't land a top tier prospect in 2009 and Cammy demands a ridiculous contract. Ie, how the Sedin for McCabe/1st trade ended up.

If next year wasn't so loaded, I wouldn't put it past Lombardi. He targets players like few other GM's in any sport. But next year is SO loaded, if anything I'd be selling those extra picks this year for high picks next year if you can find a taker.
