I know there have been many "Stamkos or Doughty" threads and "Cammy and a pick" threads but I haven't seen a lot of discussion of who would we like to see join the organ eye zation overall on draft day. I would appreciate some discussion of these scenarios:
If the Kings get the first overall pick...
#1. Steven Stamkos. LGK cheers as the Kings take the best player available and most valuable asset in the draft. Kyle Woodlief from Red Line Report says they should have taken Nikita Filatov.
#6. Luke Schenn. The St. Louis Blues, already stocked with a young mobile defense corps and lacking for offense trade their first round pick for Dallas's 1st and Mike Cammelleri. Kings get Hickey's defense partner from WJC, where they were an excellent shut down pairing.
#31. Yann Sauve. Big and mobile defenceman but stock has slipped due to concerns about hockey sense. LGK experiences some grumbling due to availability of 6'4, 195lb LW Joe Colborne who slipped to due to perceived "character" issues...
If the Kings draft second overall...
#2. Drew Doughty. After many of us feared Dean Lombardi would trade down a couple of spots Dean Lombardi takes the best defenseman available. LGK breathes a collective sigh of relief.
#20. Colten Teubert. After Dallas late season slide and early exit from the playoffs the Kings find themselves with the 20th pick. Dean Lombardi jumps at a chance to get a defenseman who has been compared to Adam Foote. Those of us who had hoped to draft Karl Alzner last year begin to see the method to our GM's madness.
#31 David Toews. Chicago drafted too high to justify taking "Baby Toew", the 5'11", 185 pounder from the University of North Dakota. At #31 the Kings think he is a steal.
If the Kings draft third overall...
#5 Zach Bogosion. Convinced he is the next Matty Norstrom, but with bigger offensive upside Dean surprises a few people by swapping picks with Nashville (Florida's pick) to take Bogosion. As part of the deal Nashville swaps it's own first rounder for Dallas's first.
#17 Michael Del Zotto. Del Zotto's slide down the draft ends when the Kings take him, swearing they had him in their top 4 defensemen in the draft. Has high offensive talent but needs to work on play in his own end.
#31 Joe Colborne. A vigourous debate begins throughout LGK as Dean finally picks a forward with impressive size (6'4") and skill but who gets black marks from pundits for a perceived lack of determination and motivation. Plays in the AJHL instead of major junior. A high risk, high reward pick that helps the pipeline's depth at left wing.
Okay folks...flame away!
The Following User Says Thank You to Dominic Lavoie For This Useful Post:
I like your picks and most of the scenarios. I too think DLombardi will wheel and deal. If the Kings r fortunate to draw the first pick itz a no brainer...Please no Doug Smith's,pick Ron Francis...Im losing it...take SStam...if not DDoughy and then KBeach or ZBogosian who might be a good fit with LA's building of America's hockey team...in case anyone was noticing...in the last few years the Kings have drafted as many as 17 American players...wow...and some dam good Euros and Canucks...Go Dean Go!
After Hickey last year, I don't think DL will be able to surprise any of us.
I agree that it would be hard for him to surprise us again but lets get real here - last years draft had a big three - not a big four. As someone who has seen Hickey play in the WHL I can tell you that he is a heck of a power play QB and plays good positional defense. There are four or five defensemen in this draft who fit the Karl Alzner profile and they can be had at a lower draft position. Think Schenn, Bogosion, Teubert, Sauve. Plus there are lower rated D like Tyler Myers (who I have also seen play) who could be valuable NHL players. Myers is 6'7", skates well and can chip in a bit on offense.
The point of this thread is to get people talking about what they would like to get out of this draft with two first round picks and a high second rounder. I think with a bit of creativity the kings can get some big pieces of their puzzle...

If the Kings can get a future hall of famer (like Ron Francis) from this draft than I would be quite stoked. I'll be pleased if we get a top pairing defensemen, a shut down defensemen and/or a top six forward...
there are alot of things that I would like to see happen. Most of them involve what draft position other teams (and the kings) end up drafting. If we do get the number one overall I do not see trading down to anywhere lower than 3or 4 (unless a once in a lifetime trade comes together).
If the kings get #1 overall and Nashville gets the #3 (from florida) and #15, I would like to see DL trade for both of those picks and maybe one of Nashville young D. We would have to sweeten the deal a bit so maybe we can give them Harrold or a 2nd round pick as well.
the other possible trade partner would be atlanta. If they are in the number 3/4 spot. Trade the #1 and labarbara to them for the 3/4 and lehtonen. Atlanta has a goalie that is coming up named Pavelic that they think can take over soon. And they still have Hedberg and then woluld have Labs, which I think they would be glad to go with for a season or so until Pavelic is ready. Atlanta Has another 1st round pick from Pit for this years draft but I dont think we could get that and Lehtonen. And yes this is more of a dream trade but I dont care.
The long shot would be toronto if they could stop winning and drop down tho the #4 pick. Trade the #1 for the #4, Antropov and another pick/prospect. We pick up the guy we want, we get the #1/2 center DL talks about and another pick/prospect.
#6. Luke Schenn. The St. Louis Blues, already stocked with a young mobile defense corps and lacking for offense trade their first round pick for Dallas's 1st and Mike Cammelleri. Kings get Hickey's defense partner from WJC, where they were an excellent shut down pairing.
Personally don't think Cammy + ~23rd overall pick will land a pick in the top 7/8 where most "experts" say there's a drop in talent. It probably would be highly short sighted for a team picking in the top 10 (perhaps not Nashville) to trade a top pick for Cammalleri who only has one year left on his deal.
And I'm not sure which young mobile defensemen you're talking about on St. Louis. They got Erik Johnson.....and that's about it in terms of D under 25. Jeff Woywitka has had trouble sticking in the NHL and has cleared waivers at least once this year. Barret Jackman, Eric Brewer, and Jay McKee are 27/28/30 respectively. Those guys would be on their decline/final years of their deals when a potential '08 draft pick is starting his prime.
