Its not the FACT that Blake left, its the WAY he left. We as meager fans will never be priivy to the details of the meetings between DT and Blake during 01. What was played in the media has always been a he said/they said as to what was true, what was exaggerated, and what was out and out lies. The few things that werent really contested were the fact that in the middle of the season the Kings Captain made it clear that he would not accept any offer from the Kings extended to him because he wanted to test the FA market and that as negotiations soured (to what extent we can never know for sure...) that the Captain decided not to be Captain anymore. Whatever DID happen was undoubtedly a major distraction to the locker room, and as a fan it doesnt garner warm feelings for a player when they are willing to flash the ultimate diss to a team. To me handing back a captains letter is like saying you've already checked out.
Luc gave his heart and soul and was 100% class every day. He deserved that cup and since it wasnt gonna happen as a King he deserved the opportunity to go to a contender and take his chance at getting it. You know what happened the moment he got that cup?? He came back to the Kings. He never dissed or disparaged the Kings when he was gone or the Wings after he returned and for that he deserves every accolade and achievement he has earned. Luc deserved to have his number retired because he was Gold/Purple/Black/Silver from jump.
Can we say that Blake has always unfailingly bled Royal colors??
Probably not. You can't just go retiring everyone's numbers.

Robataille - Most goals for a LW
Vachon - Only good goalie kings have had (except maybe Hrudy in 93)
Dion - One of the highest scoring players all time

If the fans voted it would be a pretty close race, with him getting the number up in the rafters by the narrowest margin.
When the day does come, he may be the first player in any sport to get boo'd by his own fans during the ceremony.
I am interested in the timing of the topic/question. Why has this topic been raised AGAIN? Also, since there are plenty of x-Kings worthy of this honor, do you think Matty is deserving as well?
Probably but I don't believe he deserves it. I also do not think he should be a shoe in for the Hall of Fame even though he will probably make the cut. Blake was an outstanding mobile defenseman who could do it all but I do not believe he had the presence of a hall of famer or the career of a great all time king.
