About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. HNIC after hours said San Jose is interested in Blake and they want to trade Marleau?
I doubt it will be Blake for Marleau, but if he's available, I
Marleau is without a doubt the most overrated player in the league. People talk about him like he's some kind of 95-point superstar. Aside from two good seasons at just over a ppg, he's never hit 58 points.
Regardless of how "playing with injuries" Rob Blake is, it would be wrong to remove the experience he brings from JMFJ's development at this point by trying to get Marleau for him.
marleau is their prince, their pride and joy. i think it would piss off all of their fans if he was dealt. Because they hate LA so much (which i find comical), they'd really be pissed if he came here...
I doubt San Jose would trade an impact roster player like Marleau at the deadline for Blake just to make a playoff push, "bad" year or not. Trade deadline deals are usually made for prospects and picks. Playoff-bound teams would probably prefer to make deals that wouldn't upset the balance of their team, and getting rid of their captain would definitely do that. That said, DL does seem to have a boner for San Jose players he drafted, so...
Marleau is not an impact player. and I agree, he is completely overpaid and overrated. There is no edge to his game. He is said to be a "quiet" leader which, in the case of the Kings has been ineffective. I think he would definitely fill the role as our 2nd line center but I think we could find someone better than him for that position.
....That's going to be really friggin' hard to find. If Lecavalier-Richards is the top 1-2 center combo in the league, than Thornton-Marleau is second. Marleau is really good. Sure he's kind of a hick but who cares? San Jose did better in the playoffs with Marleau and Damphousse than they've done with Thornton and Marleau. Marleau kicks ass, I would hope the Kings would be willig to trade Blake and any center prospect to land him.
I agree that I don't think the Sharks would want to shake up their locker room with trading their #2 center and Captain before the playoffs.
As for DL, I don't think he wants to go for a 6.3 mill contract for 2 more seasons.
However, though he's offensively inconsistent at times (and though this is a bad year for him), I just want to say...
he has SPEED that is desperately needed down the middle on this Kings team.
