i have actually been suggesting that they do this for a while now.

no team looking for a backup is likely to claim Cloutier, but they may be interested in claiming Aubin on the way back up, and the Kings would have zero problem swallowing half of a prorated $260,000 salary.

it's probably the best way to begin cleaning up the goaltending pileup they have... next will likely be buying out Cloutier at the end of the season, and letting Ersberg walk.
