The past two weeks SI has run the results of NHL player polls regarding coaches.
Last week the question was 'Which NHL head coach would you most like to play for?'
The top six:
Babcock (DET) - 16%
Nolan (NYI) - 10%
Gretzky (PHX) - 8%
Quenneville (COL) - 7%
Murray (STL) - 4%
Sutter (NJD) - 4%
None of these guys has won a Cup as a coach. As of 3/23 the Isles, Yotes and Blues were well outside a playoff spot while the Avs were barely in the 8th spot. Nolan and Quenneville have won coach-of-the-year awards.
This week the question was 'Which NHL coach would you least like to play for?'
The winners:
Keenan (CGY) - 36% CRAWFORD (LAK) - 10%
Hitchcock - (CBJ) - 10%
Tortorella (TBY) - 10%
Therrien (PIT) - 7%
Players couldn't vote for their own coach. The Flames and Pens are in the playoffs. Keenan has coached eight teams in 19 years and this will be his 12th playoff appearance as coach. Tortorella was received 35% of the votes by goalies.
No data was given as to reasons why players chose the way they did.
Keenan running away with the least-liked vote shouldn't surprise anyone, the man's people skills are legendary <sic>.
Crow, Hitch and Tortorella tying for runner-up least-liked by non-Kings? Interesting. That may make signing free-agents a bit trickier...

I saw Keenan in Arizona with his asst. coaches and some staff. The Kings were losing to Phoenix, the game was on TV and he was watching it in the bar at the hotel. The Flames played the Coyotes the next day and whoever won that game would take posession of 8th place. The Flames had just lost to the Kings and Ducks after barely squeaking out a win in San Jose. He looked intense, almost psycho and walked out once Phoenix scored their fourth goal. I thought the players were in for a colossal "Iron Mike" screamfest. Turns out he had a tantrum that morning at the practice facility in Scottsdale. The players were told practice was cancelled and he proceeded to shut the door and scream his head off. Its not difficult to figure out, with his reputation, why players would prefer not to play for him.

You'd think (and pray) that owners would take serious notice of this list. It's time everybody on the "least liked" list moved on. Any success they have with this year's team won't be duplicated next year. I'd also like to see listings for liked & hated former coaches from past two yrs.
The biggest reveal though would be, who 10 coaches players would pick from the minors who should get a shot at the big time. There's got to be better coaching talent than Keenan & Crawford out there.
Strange as that is... Why? Are players overachieving hoping they get traded or p/u by a better team or better place to play? I never thought Keenan would last a full season in Calgary but hey, what do I know? Wish we got more hockey news in SoCal.
