About This Page: This is a discussion on LA Kings Talk within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. It's been awhile since I last witnessed the NHL lottery. I realize that there's a supposed 'numerical system' to award the lowest ranked clubs going into this thing.
It's been awhile since I last witnessed the NHL lottery. I realize that there's a supposed 'numerical system' to award the lowest ranked clubs going into this thing. Instead of using a random ping pong ball kind of set up at least gives some sort of legitimacy of somewhat total randomness, here's a guy opening up envelopes like a B rated Academy awards.
To top that off, weren't the selections almost in the same order that the NHL Network predicted in the percentages?
Pete Mahovolich's expression of supreme dissapointment was also priceless.
The lottery drawing was actually conducted in New York at the league offices, the opening of the envelopes was done in Toronto with the deputy commissioner and the GMs from the 5 clubs that could pick 1st overall. There WAS a random ping pong ball setup going on.
The reason they didn't show the ping pong balls coming out of the machine is because teams are awarded number combos and you then have to match the winning number combo to whichever team had that combo belonging to them. If Tampa had the winning combo, the results were going to be in the reverse order of the standings, which they were. It wasn't like the Crosby lotto where every team had a chance of winning.
Besides, don't you think if the league was going to fix the lottery and Stamkos is gonna be their next great big name player, they'd put him in a better media market (LA or the Isles) than Tampa?
Name two franchise's that need to win the lottery to stay afloat...You guessed it Pitts/Tampa. The NHL should just move that Lightning Franchise they don't attract anyone anyways.

Say what you will. I find it quite odd that no footage or text is made available to the public/fans. How hard would it be for the League to put a camera on the "random ping pong ball setup"? To say to the fans that the system is too complicated for us to understand is a joke. You and I both know that some die hard on this board would love to pick apart their system and make some highlighted chart for the simpletons to understand. I know i would appreciate it.

They showed the balls in the hopper before they drew them, they didn't show them pulling the balls out of the hopper.
If you look at the other posts about the draft, they draw 4 numbers. Tampa had something like 250 combos, the Kings had around 180. Do you want them to televise a graphic of some sort of spread sheet with the various combos that each team has?
This was only the 2nd time the NHL has televised the draft lottery. And look at this, the NBA does it the exact same way with the team logos in an envelope and someone revealing them.
In order for the league to want to fix the lottery, there's got to be some compelling reason to award a certain market the #1 pick. I'd like to know why you think it would be better for the league to fix the lottery so Tampa keeps the #1 pick instead of putting Stamkos in a larger media market like LA, a team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2002 etc. Tampa's won a Cup this decade but they're not a large media market, and a large portion of the league's younger stars that they're already marketing play for Eastern Conference teams (Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin to name a few). Wouldn't the league want some big name young star talent in the West as well? I still don't see the compelling reason to think there was a fix to keep the #1 pick in the hands of the Lightning.

YES...

The draft has to do with more than just one player and more than just our team. Conspiracy Theories serve a purpose. It makes the attacked have to prove their story as accurate. I AM A BIG PROPONENT OF FULL DISCLOSER. If you have nothing to hide, then prove me wrong.
I understand It is only the second time the NHL has televised the draft, but for you to put up a clip of THE NBAs draft to show the similarities does nothing for me. Both formats suck!
In todays digital world it would not be that hard for the NHL to put up a single PDF showing a chart on nhl.com!.............i know its a crazy concept. A youtube video of the balls actually coming out of the hopper wouldn't be that hard to produce either. Why can they show you a clip of the machine spitting out balls before the drawing and not during?
