Finish last overall and the team’s chance of winning the NHL draft lottery is 48.2 percent. Finish second-last overall and that drops to 18.8 percent. Think that’s incentive to drop those final few games of the season with nothing else on the line? Shhhh, that’s just between us.
So if you’re the Los Angeles Kings or Toronto Maple Leafs and it’s looking pretty clear you’re not going to make a run for the playoffs, here’s something to keep in mind as you close out the season.
Sarnia offensive phenom Steven Stamkos is the odds-on favorite to be the first pick overall.
If LA ends up in last place and Toronto ends up next to last, my bet would be that Toronto ends up with the 1st overall pick. My reasoning is that the NHL would rather see Stamkos end up in the hockey mecca that is Toronto and not in LA.

So you really believe there is some mega conspiracy theory being thought up at the NHL offices?
The first pick to Los Angeles would be MUCH more beneficial to the NHL then the Leafs getting the pick.
Don't the Leafs sell out every game even when they suck and miss the playoffs? Don't people in Toronto leave their seasons seats in their will?
LA fans only go when we win, Toronto fans will wait 3 hours in -20 degrees to watch their team lose.
The NHL NEEDS the Kings to have a face to market this team with. I'm not sure if it's this kid everyone is wild about, but if there is a conspiracy, it might be in L.A.'s favor baby!

Was just going to post this same thing. The NHL would LOVE the Kings to be a 50 win team every year that competes in the playoffs. The idea that they want Toronto to succeed is silly. They don't care. They know people will show up there anyway. They need a major US market to do well besides NY.

The lottery process is viewed in a back room with representatives from all the participating teams. The actual process involves drawing four out of fourteen numbered balls. There are 1,001 potential winning combinations with one being ignored [11,12,13,14]. Each team is assigned a certain number of combinations. I think it's a bit paranoid to think they'd rig the drawing, it's not like it the NBA Draft lottery in 1984 when David Stern just picked one envelope to determine the winner.

The NHL is to stupid to pull off conspiracies like this... They'd get found out... They have friggin hamsters running this league..
