Folks, it's a shell game. Overall AEG is making huge sums of money in downtown LA. If they weren't you wouldn't see new projects like the Nokia Center and that new luxury apartment building going up across the street from Staples Center.
The Kings aren't going anywhere. They are an anchor tenant for Staples Center. This is just an excuse to raise ticket prices.
No, it's a thing they need to do to prepare for re-signing players like Anze and JMFJ and all of the other young players coming up. There is a plan, and by raising prices slightly now they avoid a drastic raise in the next 2 years. I know I'm not a season ticket holder so it doesn't affect me, but it does make sense. The Kings are going to have to do something to sign all of these young guys to keep them around. This is a gradual increase IMO. The cost of living raise is usually 4%, so a 5% increase is not asking a whole lot considering that they claim they are losing money. I actually am starting to trust AEG now. This is a business don't forget and it takes awhile to turn a losing business around. I'm doing my part by buying Center Ice every year to watch the Kings. It would make no sense for me to buy a season ticket package since my finances don't allow me to travel 2000 miles for every home game. If the fans in LA want a winner they need to put up the cash for season tickets to help this team. If I lived there I would do it no matter what their record was year to year. I know they have an outstanding attendence record for a losing team, but don't give up now that they jacked the price up a little bit.
But since that doesn't look like it'll happen anytime soon, I say we tax the following regulars outside Staples: the morons waving into the camera during the FSN postgame show; anyone with a guitar; the guy selling sausage sandwiches of uncertain origin (can you say meow), and those homely little trollops handing out flyers for strip joints.
Bring back the old Silver and Black jersey from the early 90's.
I don't hate our current jersey, but there is a reason why the Raiders make so much money with their merchandise, they have cool colors!! Purple doesn't sell. I know they're considered 'gang colors' or whatever, but it's still $$ in the bank for the Kings.
I hope the 3rd jersey they're coming out with has the old silver+black colors.
Not to mention some of the greatest moments in Kings history came with those jerseys ('91 division title, '93 Stanley cup run).
Here's the thing about AEG and the Kings. From what I've been told, it is better for the Kings to lose aroun 3 to 7 million or make more than 5 million. If they make less tan 5 million or lose less than 3 million AEG doesn't get the maximum tax benefit. I don't have anything to back this up other than conversations with our corporate tax attorney; and the company I work for loses money every year, although our ancillary companies make $$$. The tax liability vs. tax write off for losing money is the reason why. Seems to make sense to me. Although the playoffs are really where its at. I remember reading something about teams making up to 3 million profit each playoff round.

Price increases are expected. People will complain, but nearly all of the season ticket holders will find a way to get to the games they can regardless of whether they pay $55/game or $57/game to get in. If a tied for last place season didn't deter them, what makes you think $200 more/season will? People just don't like to be patronized and fed a line of BS. Yadda Yadda Yadda we are losing money...well fix it...don't tell us we are lucky not to be Dallas Stars fan because then it would really be bad...they pay a whole $12/more a seat to watch a perennial contender.
It is awesome to "do your part" to support this team, but honestly if buying season tickets and having a solid season ticket base were the only ingredient in the recipe for success then this team should have had a cup by now. The loyal fans will always be here and buying tickets, it is winning that is missing from the business plan.
In short, the same fans will still be here paying $20 for parking and $10 for beer and god knows what for a ticket, but at some point the team has to win to get more people in the door if they want to grow the business and not simply pass along costs to the already loyal base. (I hear Ice Girls have been proven alternative in the past).
You joke but in Manchester, where we've been handed a ticket price increase every season that the Monarchs have been in existence, we are typically told that the increase is in part due to the Kings raising the cost of the affiliation agreement. AEG owns both the Kings and Monarchs...
