DL and Burke signed on to two completely different situations. DL has to build, not rebuild, a franchise from pretty much the ground up. Burke inherited a team that was much farther along and had recent success.
The one deal that really helped propel Anaheim was the Fedorov deal w/ Columbus. Burke must have had some pictures of Doug McLean with a live boy or dead girl in his bed in order to make him agree to that deal: McLean gives up a good young D man who makes about $7 million less than Fedorov, who still has 3 years left at $8mil/ year and is already 35 years old? Who does that deal? Burke gets Beauchemin and they also pick up Marchant off waivers, who Columbus waived to make room for Fedorov's salary, and they get a quality checking center. In the offseason they then had enough room to coax Niedermayer to sign as a UFA to play with his brother.
So, he pulls the wool over McLean's eyes. The next piece was the Pronger trade. He had the picks and prospects that Edmonton valued. I give him credit for striking while the iron is hot. For DL, the iron is not even luke warm. But with the dealdine and draft coming, I think DL will get this franchise to turn the corner.
the pronger deal wasnt hard for him to make. His wife wanted to be a So Cal socialite like she was in St. Louis, where she comes from one of the most wealthy and established families in that area. I think CP would have only accepted/forced a trade to a couple of teams, and Anaheim was probably on top of that list. Hard to give Burke TOO much credit on that one, as I think any GM the Samuelli's employed could have done that. Same might be able to be said for signing Scott. Burke is as shrewd as an arab trader though when it comes to manipulating circumstances to benefit himself. Also, lets face it, a lot of Burke's pinache if you will, comes from him being an egomaniac that cant get enough of seeing his name in the papers.
Bernier was Al Murray's pick, not Lombardi's (and DL went way out of his way to distance himself from that pick before going up to the lectern on draft day).

You honestly think a scout for the Flyers (even a pro one) didnt know Jonathan Bernier and his complete resume?
I think he was just saying that this was a pick the Kings scouting staff was set on before he arrived, and he went through it with it without objection.
Drafting is an organizational effort. The GM has the final word, but everyone gives tremendous input.
its comical and/or sad that people still are thinking about he signing of veteran talent.
he got Zus and Preissing locked up long term.
with stuart and nagy he basically bought draft picks and more reserves.
Blake was a Timmmy L deal. Bottom line. and even if it was a Dean decision, Blake is going to fetch something nice at the deadline.
Thornton? Willise? Who gives a ****? This organization was ****ed up internally and now Dean has that up and running, including what is almost certainly the most complete and thorough scouting team in the league, much more than when DT was in charge...
but youre still concerned about Brian Wilsies 12 minutes of ice time...oh, right, Marc Andre Cliche should be gettingthat!
give me a ****ing break...
Nicely said.

Garon?! Are you ****ing SERIOUS?! Go (re)read this thread:
At the end of that thread, you will hopefully realize what was Garon's situation.
What has DL done to goaltending?
Let me see: as far as I know:
Bernier, Zatkoff, Quick, Ersberg, Rowatt, Taylor. I know he didn't draft ALL of these, but his tendency to improve development helped greatly.
