I commented on this in CBGB's Breakfast with the GM thread, but it got buried there, and the fanboi in me just can't let it go. The photo below (credit: savemefromtears) seems to show that Lombardi has Boyle penciled in as the 4th line center, skating with Zeiler and (presumably) Ivanans, who isn't shown because the chart only tracks players 25 & under.
Based on Dean's comment the other morning about Boyle being ready to play head-to-head with Getzlaf, I'm inferring that he means that literally, matching up Boyle's 4th line as a shut-down line against Getzlaf's line. I can see the logic on Lombardi's part: who wouldn't want a huge 4th-line center who won't be physically dominated by any center in the league? Based on the little bit I've seen of him, though, that seems to be waste of Boyle's offensive potential. He's got a great shot, but it's unlikely he'd have a chance to utilize it skating a regular shift with Zeiler and Ivanans.
I was really hoping they'd audition Boyle to fill the 2nd line center role, as he seemed to have some chemistry when paired with Frolov. With Army and possibly Ellis in the fold next year, we certainly have no shortage of guys who can fill that 4th line center role.
He's been an offensive player his whole career. C'mon, Dean, give the kid a chance!

Things like this constantly get jumbled around. He's young, so, he's gotta start somewhere, so to speak. He's got his place on the roster coming up for next season, so, it ain't all that bad. He's playing. He'll find his niche and there you go. 4th line ain't eternal.
I wouldn't worry too much. It just a PROJECTION. Boyle will play in the spot he earns. DL is simply keeping his expectations low. I mean, look at how he has JMFJ penciled in as a 3/4 defenseman -- yet JMFJ is constantly reffered to as a "franchise player", "a cornerstone of the future", etc.
This spread sheet is not a strict plan that DL is going to adhere to.
If your job is to be the designated shut-down guy for the other team's top line, that projects to way the hell more than 4th line minutes. I'd rather see 18+ minutes of Boyle vs. Getzlaf than just about any other matchup on the board. That said, Boyle on the blueline makes as much organizational sense now as it ever has, if not more.
He is going to be a fourth line center FOREVER, it is because Crow always keeps the same lines throughout everygame and every season. the lines never change...
if Boyle steps up and shows that he deserves to be on the second line and can cut it as the second line center I am sure he will get his chance. But he will only be a rookie next year and has to start somewhere, DL sees that at worst Boyle will be able to manage the fourth line and thats where he should start and work his way up.
