It is imperative that Lombardi make a trade in the off season to acquire a good young defenseman.
I used to think that Cammalleri for Suter would be a good deal, but now I am thinking it would take more than Cammalleri to pry Suter away from Nashville. Maybe Cammalleri and the 2nd round pick we acquired from Calgary in the Conroy deal could land us Suter.
If something like that could be worked out:

wouldn't be bad. Maybe Lombardi re-signs Modry, or another cheap UFA vet as the #7 or one of the other kids from Manchester can fill that role.
Bottom line the defense doesn't improve dramatically next season unless Preissing and Lubo pick up their games.
It'd be nice, but I don't see it happening. I think Nashville knows what they've got with Suter, Weber, Klein, and Hamhuis on their D line, and their not going to rush to get rid of any of them until their contracts become to large to handle. But who knows, stranger things have happened (ie Montreal trading Huet for a freaking second rounder?!? WTF??)
As for a UFA defenseman, I'm hoping we take a hard look at signing Jason Smith. He's not the youngest guy out there, but he's exactly what we're lacking and he is younger than Matti or Modry (and meaner than either).

Really though, reality check for some of the Stamkosians, this team is going to suck next year if we don't get some bloody defense, Stamkos or no. ****, we could end up being the front runners for Tavares, become Pittsburgh-West and we STILL wouldn't make the playoffs with this defensive unit. Doughty and Schenn are looking much more appealing right now.

Oh, and if Cloutier didn't make a couple of incredible saves, Edmonton drops 8-9 on us easy.
I still don't get all the Cloutier hatred. The guy was injured and hadn't played. What did you guys really expect? I blame the people who brought him here more. Aside from that, I think he's been doing well the past few games. I watched the whole game last night and he made big saves. It's the horrible defense that should take the blame. Most goaltenders would let 5 goals in with nobody playing well in front of them. Get off the whole Cloutier hatred bandwagon already.

I can't really hate on Cloutier. He is what he is. From all accounts, he is a great guy and works hard in practice. I hated when we traded for him and I hated even more when DL gave him that big contract for 2 extra years, but none of that is Cloutier's help. He doesn't go to the media and bitch and doesn't make up **** like certain #4's. With that said, I wish he wasn't on this team.

There seems to be alot of talk about:
a) making an offer sheet to an RFA forward or goaltender (MAF)
or
b) acquiring a young defenceman through a trade
Why not make an offer to a young RFA defenceman- maybe Anton Babcuck?
23 years old and 6'5, 212 lbs.
Assets: Displays untapped offensive potential and a big shot from the point. Owns enough physical ability to dominate the back line.
Flaws: Needs to round out his game, especially in the defensive zone, since he's still very raw. Must be more disciplined on and off the ice.
