I know there has been a lot of Fro bashing in the past, but I think it is time to acknowledge that behind Kopitar, he is the best foreward that we have. He even surpasses Kopitar in the points per game category (.931ppg compared to .909ppg). I haven't seen anyone this year who can maintain control of the puck, fighting off multiple checkers as Fro can, not to mention his ability to steal the puck and regain posession. He has been streaky in the past, but this year we have seen that when he is on the ice, he creates opportunities for him and his linemates and is a difference maker.
I've never been a basher for Frolov, but he's never earned my rave until he's come back from his groin injury... wow. He is the best (as in more close to his prime, more valuable to a hypothetical playoff team) player in the West (and maybe the NHL) who no one really values how freaking skilled he is. He's not flashy like AO or anything, but he's dominant. He has shown his skill progress season after season, too. He seems to also be working on his defenseive game, at least to the point where he's not just floating and actually involved somewhat in the play in his zone. He's very physical (without being much of a hitter), and has better puck control skill than Jason Allison or anyone else in recent memory on the kings had in their prime.
Flame away possibly, but Frolov is the best player that no one is actually talking about (i.e. Kopitar gets headlines of being most un-talked about).
This thread needs to be stickied so the disappointingly few of us who recognize the brilliance of Fro need not waste our time creating them again and again. A Frolov Appreciation thread is always appropriate.
Of all the young wingers on this team, why is the most talented also the most underappreciated?
'Cause he doesn't do push ups after goals, isn't 20 anymore or have a signature finishing move.
I also think it's a matter of growing into a role. He's come along so gradually, the expectations are always moving slightly ahead of what he's doing. Meanwhile, no one notices that he surpasses the expectations that used to be applied.
It's like being disappointed at the horse for never getting the carrot that's 2 feet in front of him while ignoring the fact that the horse has walked 20 miles.
RIGHT ON!!! Did you see those moves he made tonight to get the puck to Kopi for the goal?!
Hell yeah! And just forget about all the other stunts he's been pulling and puck posession skills he's displayed night in and out for about a month now.
