Maybe not...but Gary Roberts and Rod Brindamour were not available and neither were any other guys of their ilk, unless you want to pay 7 mil+ a year for 5 or 6 years for Chris Drury's 50 points or so a year.
Where did I say the Kings should've signed ANY of those guys?

I didn't say they were cancers at all, you were the one hyping them up as the second coming of Mark Messier or Steve Yzerman. They were "good character players that don't give up. They provided leadership to the young guys." When and where did you see that? At what point in the season did you think to yourself, "wow, Tom Preissing really never gives up out there, and he's really mentoring Jack Johnson!" or anything like that? I don't think they were cancers or bad lockerroom guys (except maybe Nagy) but like I said, I don't think of any of them other than Thornton (maybe Stuart) as fitting the "character" role. That's all.
Look, you can bitch and whine about Lombardi all you want. Anyone that could read between the lines two years ago knew that he was go to go the route of building this thing through the draft. That takes time.
And no, overpaying for Handzus, Nagy, Calder, etc. doesn't mean dick now, nor will it in 3 years from now when the Kings are a playoff team again.
Easy sparky, I was just pointing out being an NHL GM, while a prestigious job, does not mean you can't be an idiot also. I didn't even mention Lombardi, Handzus, Nagy, or Calder.
We got Nagy for the simple reason that nobody had any idea what O'Sully would be like this season
I remember watching the rookie camp which he was at and thinking he wasn't improving
If he was the player we say in 06/07 Nagy makes a suitable replacement for him while O'Sullly is down in Manchester living with the Cloutiers
Now O'Sully fills that hole so you need one less UFA
Plus irrespective of their age and college experience you cannot throw a Boyle or a Purcell into the NHL for their first professional season, then who else in Manchester could have come up, Zeiler please, Tukonen, still having his issues, that was it - look at the Manchester roster most of them are in their first AHL season.

You said Nagy was "the opposite of a character guy". What would you call that if not a cancer?
I HARDLY hyped them as the next coming of Yzerman or Messier. I see them for what they are which is probably why I am not nearly as disappointed as you and the masses are with these signings. Let me break it down into categories so my stance on these players is very clear.
Roster fillers (guys to fill out the roster for 1 season and maybe get something at the deadline for):
Nagy
Stuart
Modry
Bridges to get us through to when younger players are coming up and challenging for positions:
Preissing
Calder
Handzus
Role players and character guys:
Willsie
McCauley
Thornton
Cloutier
There. Now you know my exact stance on each signing. No Messiers to be found here, but no cancers to be found either. No one saying stupid things to the media, making waves, and setting a bad example for the kids ala Avery, Belanger, and Roenick. These signings were ALL legitimate and reasonable signings for a team rebuilding. The only signing you can really find fault with was the Cloutier extension. But in theory, if you were looking for a guy to mentor Bernier or any young goalies for that matter...Cloutier would seem like a good fit. He was known as a battler that doesn't quit, a leader in the lockerroom and also had several 30 win seasons under his belt. Seems like a good guy to groom the young ones to me. The injuries and poor play really screwed that up though and made the extension look really bad. THAT IMO is the only signing you can criticize.
You said Nagy was "the opposite of a character guy". What would you call that if not a cancer?
He's a slackass, Stumpel-type player. To me, a cancer is Avery. Nagy is just lazy and is the type of guy to give up on the ice.
I just think this team lacked character and heart most of the season, partly because the majority of the UFAs brought in were not character guys. I would've preferred a more gritty, hard nosed team to teach the kids how to play hard, even if you lose, rather than the passive, non-emotional style we saw this season. As for the signings, I've gone over that way too much lately, let's just agree to disagree.

Well I would want that too! Who do you think DL should've signed of the available UFAs instead of the ones he did?
Yeah, except for that whole problem of giving kids too much too soon and either inflating their egos or ruining their confidence, sure. By the time this team is kicking ass and taking names, only Handzus will remain, and you're really going to try to tell me that it would have changed the fate of the organization if he's getting paid 2 million or 4 million in the last year of his deal? REALLY?
And Nagy? Bitch was a calculated risk. It didnt work out so he's GONE. I know I'm really upset about the cash spent on him this year, NOT.
Yeah but throwing the team out there to play in front of ECHL caliber talent in net the last two years will do wonders for their confidence. As sick as I am of the morons who post here the apologists are even worse.
Signing Handzus to that contract was risky at the time and looks pretty foolish now but that is ok because Dean expects him to be better next year. You didn't think the Kings were going to make the playoffs but DL sure thought there was a chance and that is what scares me as a fan. There is so much talking out both sides of the mouth going on with this GM it’s not even comical. "We were in the hunt for the Chara's and the Drury's" is the quote when they sign somewhere else and then its "We can't be forced into playing salary cap roulette" when it's a convenient excuse for why the team sucks.
If anyone thinks what happened here this year was all part of the plan than you really should have that DL flavored chalupa that is lodged in your throat removed so you can get some oxygen to your dome.
Does DL deserve more time? Absolutely he does, but don't be so sure he knows exactly what he is doing. There are plenty of mistakes that lie in his wake.

Since when is a GM saying that the team had a chance to "fighting for a playoff spot" scary? What GM in the league is going to say "we realistically will suck".

Come on.

I am not talking about his public comments but I think you knew that. DL, in his heart of hearts, thought this team was going to contend for a playoff spot as he constructed it and that is scary.

I'm still trying to understand what is "scary" about expecting that your team will compete for a playoff spot.
