As excited as you guys may be about Stamkos, the reality is that we need to draft defensemen. They guys at Manchester are still a ways off based on the fact none have been called up. The free agents Preissing and Stuart have played below expectations. Blake and Modry are getting old. The Kings give up way too many shots and we need to backcheck better and improve the penalty killing. The right thing to do is really look hard at the defensemen in the draft and fix our real problem.
You are correct. They need to draft defencemen right out of college, put them in the starting line up next season, and by Nov they'll be playing like a 8 yr vet. Oh Wait!!!
Blake-Hurt the first 1/3 of the season, playing well but obviously distracted.
Lubo-Fat Conract=1st year fatcat suckage. Should be better next season but certainly a step backward.
Stuart-Huge disappointment. Threw a nice check last night-but where was the play early in the season not to mention played about as meek of D as possible on Detroits 3rd goal.
Modry- Modry is Modry. Nuff Said.
Jack Johnson-the one bright spot but one most question how much more ahead of the curve he would be if he had the cuffs off and wasnt learning from the above 5 group mentioned above?
Preising- A disappointment for sure but-he has a very friendly contract and played very well when paired with better talent as he was in Ottowa and SJ. He not a top pairing guy but very good as a 4-6 dman role and maybe more with a better partner on D.

So what you're trying to say is that a d-man coming right out of juniors is for a fact gonna be able to step into the NHL over a guy that has spent a year or two in Manchester?
Mcpuck is probably just frustrated at the lack of actual 'defense' from our defenseman this year. We passed up on Alzner (stay at home type) in favor of Hickey. DL likes those offensive types. I'm not saying Hickey won't be good, but we do need some guys on the blue line that will put the opponents' best players on their asses when they skate through the crease.
Case in point was Preissing's failure to take the body last night against Datsyuk, which led to Detroit's first goal of the night.
As far as the draft goes. If we're picking 1st, I think you need to take the best player available (Stamkos). Personally, I'm not getting my hopes up for the 1st pick. If we get the 2nd or 3rd, we'll jump on the #1 D-man available.
Next years Kings defenseman:
Lubo
Preissing
JMFJ
Blake?? (off-season re-sign, 1 year contract??)
Free Agent
Harrold
Piskula
Hickey
