Yeah, one thing that stood out to me last night was the empty seats. They were everywhere. But damn, if I lived out in LI or even Queens, I'd be at NYI games all the time, fan (of the Isles) or not.
I agree, when I hear people say the attendence sucks, I think it
sgreat considering the Kings are last in the standings. It's just proves that Kings fans are die hard unlike Duck fans. Remember 2002 the Ducks averged 12'002. Here is a link to show Duck fans that I'm not lying.
Wow...9 year old non-playoff Anaheim had a whopping 4500 fewer fans in attendance on average than Los Angeles who had been around 35 years and in the playoffs that year. I'm over-****ing-whelmed.
How the **** do Duck fans get dragged into a thread about LA/NYI attendance figures?
yeah uh. a mid-week game against the worst team in the league... THAT'LL draw!
newsflash dips***ts...
Tuesday, October 10, 2006 -- Kings 4/Islanders 2
attendance: 14,394
that game ONLY drew 4,000 more fans because it was the third game of the season (you know, when the Kings are STILL in the playoff hunt)... under new management and a new coach no less.
Not to mention the simple fact that NYI and NJ suffer because they have to struggle with already established NYR. Much like Anaheim has to deal with being in LA's backyard. Then again...what the **** do I know? Apparently I'm just a front running Duck fan who obviously didn't attend enough games in 2002.
I hear that. I was at several NJ games during the 99/00 season, the year they won the cup. GREAT team to watch that season. Still, the sellouts only happened in the playoffs. If I recall correctly, only in the later rounds of the playoffs at that. It's not that NJ doesn't have the population or anything of that sort. NYR has a big part of it. They sucked hard for several years but never had a problem selling out games. Fortunately for NJ, when they didn't sell out, the average games still had anywhere between 14,000 - 17,000 people there out of 19,040.

it's like no matter what happens or how bad they would be, the Dodgers are likely to out draw the Angels 9 times out of 10... and THAT'S a sport where the two teams play in completely opposite conferences (er, leagues) and CAN actually face one another for a championship. so there's no real "rivalry" to speak of UNLESS they somehow manage to face each other in the World Series.
Islanders-- NMC is a toilet. They need a new arena and a better team. Yes, I understand it was two last teams playing-- but seriously.. Hofstra is right there and they offer damn cheap tix to students with ID. They could do better then last night-- it was a very sad sight (and of those that WERE there-- they were drunk Hofstra students). The Islanders do not compete with the Rangers.. The Islanders are a historic franchise with a rich history and a stellar run in the 80s.. they used to sell-out constantly.
Devils-- do compete and will never sell out. When they were winning the cup, they couldn't sell out. During the 94 Rangers/Devils games.. there were more Ranger fans then Devils-- it was PATHETIC. I almost, ALMOST felt bad for them... but not really... there were Let's Go Rangers chants that were louder then Devil chants. I doubt the new arena (and moving it to God awful Newark) will help.
During last nights telecast, Bob Miller mentioned that the Arena will be going over an extensive makeover in the next few years. This is the first I've ever heard of that, what do you know Anze's Mom?
A few factors, the arena is way dated and is also not nearly as accessible as Staples is to us. Fans got fed up with Mike Milbury's handling of the team and their years of pathetic play. Knowledgable Isles fans are concerned now because the team does not have a good pool of young players and prospects. DiPietro is good, but you need more than a goaltender.
The way Snow is running the team reminds me of Taylor's regime here. He'll get some good FA's but doesn't know how to draft and keep a good prospect poo.
