It probably won’t matter anyway, but a curious NHL interpretation of “goals against” has probably taken away any chance the Ducks might have had to win the coveted Jennings Trophy, which goes to the goaltenders on the team that surrenders the fewest goals during the regular season.
Entering Sunday’s regular-season finale for each team, the Ducks have given up 182 goals, four more than the Detroit Red Wings and one fewer than the San Jose Sharks. The NHL, however, also charges teams with a goal against every time they come out on the losing end of a shootout. The Ducks have dropped seven shootouts, San Jose six and Detroit five. When that math is factored in, the “goals-against” numbers become 183 for Detroit, and 189 each for the Ducks and Sharks.
The Red Wings, who host the Chicago Blackhawks in a day game, would probably win the Jennings under any circumstances. The Ducks, who host the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday night, and the Sharks, who visit the Dallas Stars, would probably need shutouts, as well as a big offensive game by Chicago against Detroit, to have any chance.
