The Ducks wound up with the 12th selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, after the lottery was held at the NHL's New York offices.
Teams that did not qualify for this season's Stanley Cup Playoffs, or clubs that acquired the first-round picks of those non-playoff clubs, participated in the lottery. The Ducks acquired the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round selections belonging to the Edmonton Oilers as compensation for Edmonton's offseason signing of Ducks forward Dustin Penner.
Fourteen balls, numbered 1 to 14, were placed in a lottery machine. The machine expelled four balls, forming a series of numbers. The four-digit series resulting from the expulsion of the balls was matched against a probability chart that divided the possible combinations among the 14 participating clubs. The chart showed that the Lightning had been assigned the numbers (2-5-6-7) that were expelled.
The Oilers look mighty stupid in a way. Missing out on the playoffs and not drafting in the first 3 rounds.
not to mention the meager 47 points they got out of Dustin Penner this season. Bertuzzi cost a little less per year and despite playing in about 15 fewer games was only 9 points behind Penner.
