Q. (Question Off Microphone.)

BRENDEN MORROW: Yeah, for now. They've got a heck of a power play. We weren't moving our feet early. They got a couple of power plays, got behind. Chased the play.

Q. The way the Red Wings looked like you were tired early on. Did you figure out what they were doing?

BRENDEN MORROW: I think we had a good two or three shifts to start the game, and then the ice got tilted the other way. We were chasing it. They were doing a good job putting the pucks in there and chasing it down. And we didn't play enough in their zone.

Q. How about Game 2?

BRENDEN MORROW: We like to not sit around and watch so much, try to initiate, be aggressive, play our side and put the puck in their zone. It's tough for those guys to score when their 200 feet from our goal.

Q. (Question Off Microphone.)

BRENDEN MORROW: Well, I think it's a little bit of both. We gotta get in those shooting lanes, not letting those pucks get through. But certainly we have to do a better job. Franzen, I think, tipped another one in. And Holmstrom. We need to come back and do a better job in both areas.

Q. How frustrating was the first 30 minutes for you guys?

BRENDEN MORROW: You don't like to get penalties early in the game. Draw the lines. Unfortunately, when you're playing special teams not everyone gets involved. That's tough, but that's part of the game. You gotta play through it. Special team are usually one of our strengths, but tonight it held us down.

Q. What kind of focus do you think they came out with to start things?

BRENDEN MORROW: I think we probably had the better of the first 2 or 3 shifts in the game, and then they started taking the play to us. And we just sort of stood around and watched, took a couple of penalties. Didn't move our feet.

Questionable 5 on 3 call. It's part of the game. We've got to fight through those things. You never want to early kill penalties. That's been our Achilles' heel right now. Every game so far, since the playoffs started, the first period has been the worst one.

MARTY TURCO

MARTY TURCO: To be at this point in the playoffs, but, yeah, you know, it's discouraging with probably some of the calls, we stumbled our feet into penalties. They've got a great power play. They've got some skill. And they made some good plays. Didn't always stop it, but I know we'll be better soon.

Q. Could you see anything, Marty, from those first three goals with Holmstrom and then Franzen standing there?

MARTY TURCO: I didn't see the first one, to say the least. And the second one I actually did see, but I was just looking so far on one side, you anticipate those types of tips, but it's just so far to go without leaving some holes. And I just got a piece of it, and a lot of times, most of the times it's enough, but tonight all of them found their way in off bars and off me. And a couple of them, our games are usually a lot closer than what they seem.

When you get down early, it is a tough one to come back from. They played the puck, and we couldn't generate too much. And there were a few things to discuss.

Q. Was that the most traffic you've seen in front of you consistently throughout these playoffs?

MARTY TURCO: Probably not the most. But every game it's tough to see all the shots. So did a great job blocking them, dictating the play where we wanted it to come from and that wasn't the case. And they didn't do anything we didn't expect. Tonight, as far as traffic, getting pucks through or anything on their power play, we'll just find ways to stay out of the box, do a little better PK ing, and we do like our chances 5 on 5.

Q. (Question off Microphone.)

MARTY TURCO: I thought so. We got told we have the ability to move within our blue, and we like to have our hands out in front of us. And I wasn't able to do that because he was coming back at us, not necessarily playing penalty, but if you ask me, some of those should be waved off. I'm not going back to the late '90s type stuff.

But he's one of the best at it of getting in there, tipping. He doesn't get enough credit probably for his hands, but he certainly was willing to pay the price and he got rewarded for it.

Q. (Question Off Microphone.)

MARTY TURCO: It's pretty tough really to think about it. From my perspective, really, I got to see the game a little bit better sitting back there.

But I've got full confidence in head coaches and even our veterans to collaborate and do what's necessary. But most importantly, our jump in inspiration needs to be there. I think we probably could be off the hook from that from what happened on Sunday night.

But this team has never made excuses. And like I said, they didn't do anything that we didn't expect out there. It was probably a little bit closer, you know, with power play goals going in, than you realize. But it's something we do need to regroup, talk about some things, and as a team, just make whatever adjustments are necessary. But it's going to come down to each and every guy to doing their part. And like I said, 5 on 5, stay out of the box, work our talent power play a little better, we'll be all right.

MIKE RIBEIRO

MIKE RIBEIRO: We need to try and create offense and battle through. And everyone knows they like to play the puck, it's just a matter of how you're going to put the pucks, where you're going to put to get them back. But, yeah, get our whole team, it's not good. But we know what we did wrong and what we have to do to get better and be a lot better than their team.

Q. How disappointing was that first period for you guys?

MIKE RIBEIRO: I think the first shift was good for us. Then 5 on 3 there after the score of those two goals, they scored three on the power play, the two first goals. And special teams is going to be big. And we didn't create much on our power play and they did. This is going to be a factor. And we need to get better at it. I think it's more to compete and winning those battles. And if you do that you'll have a better chance to win.

Q. Franzen scores his 12th playoff goal. How surprised have you been with what he's done?

MIKE RIBEIRO: I don't really care about what's his name, Franzen. His scoring has been hot but the focus has to be what we have to do as a team to win.

Q. Can you give a team like Detroit too much respect?

MIKE RIBEIRO: No, you don't have to. I can mention they skate better, faster than us today, played better with the puck, better positioning, compete better than us. And we know what we did wrong and what we have to do to get it.

Q. Do you feel it's something more that they did or you just didn't come out?

MIKE RIBEIRO: Made it probably easier game for them than we should have. Like I mentioned, we didn't battle as hard as they did. They won those one‑on‑one battles and the special teams, scored when they had to. We need to be disciplined and just be better and play as a team.

BRAD RICHARDS

Q. How frustrating was that in the first period?

BRAD RICHARDS: You just can't do it. And can't expect to win. It just took away our life and our momentum. You don't say that when you're sitting there. But you can look back at the game and say that's where the game turned and took over. Never really got back in the game after that.

Q. Do you think there's some residual hangover trouble, the overtime game?

BRAD RICHARDS: Could have been. We didn't get to the level that we needed to.

Q. Emotionally, mentally?

BRAD RICHARDS: I think everything. We've got to be better in everything in the spirit of the game in all areas. We were a little bit behind and that's why we took poundings. We were taking stick penalties. They controlled a lot of the first half of the game even more. That's something we can control. That's the good thing about this loss. We didn't put a great game out there and we got to put our game out there and see how we do and then we'll worry about Detroit after that.

Q. (Question off microphone.)

BRAD RICHARDS: You can't take penalties like that and expect to stay in games. They thrive on that power play. They've got a lot of skill out there. And every good player, every good team gets confidence when you have power plays and get the puck, handle the puck. And it just got the ball rolling. They're a tough team to stop when you do that. So we'll take care of ourselves and get those things sorted out, see where we go.

Q. Were there moments of frustration with the penalties?

BRAD RICHARDS: It's frustrating when you go down 5 on 3. That's all I can say
