Default Some ROller Questions

I was thinking of picking up roller hockey since it is cheaper out here in CA. I already play ice in a beer league, but might make the jump and had a few questions.

1. Does anyone make an XXL girdle. I don't want to look like a retard in ice gear playing roller. If they do not make an XXL girdle how forgiving in size are the girdles (do they stretch or not)

2. How the hell do you stop? I have heard horror stories about guys busting up their knees trying to do hockey stops?

3. How easy is the transition from roller to ice? I know I will suck, but if I play on a novice league will it be evident?

Thanks

1. No Girdle in roller.

2. Can't help you, I can stop on a dime on roller, can't at all on ice.

3. I hear that once you priactice a bit on skating with somone who knows what you're doing, it comes pretty easy. My friend said he spent like 2 hours going from roller to ice and he was fine

I think the transition from roller to ice is harder than the transition from ice to roller. If you have your balance and turning down for ice skates than roller skates won't be an issue. Stopping for me is pretty much the same as ice, you just need to be sure to have the right wheels for the surface you are playing on. As far as size of equipment I'm sure you won't have a problem. I've played against and along some pretty big players and they've had no problems getting equipment. It's definitely much cheaper to play roller than ice, which is why i've usually only played in roller leagues. But it's a different game than ice as well. I don't think you'll have a problem with the transition.

Correct if I am wrong here...

More grip = softer wheel
Less grip = harder wheel....i.e. slides more?

More or less, yeah, but it really depends on the surface and the wheel together.

I went from roller to ice and the only problem I had was stopping. Skating is really, pretty much the same.

It's really hard to explain to stop without actually showing it. The gist of it really is swinging your strong leg in front of you (while turning a 90 degree angle) and basically letting it slide until it stops you and as long you have good wheels, you won't slide, you just stop.

I know that probably sounds confusing, but that's the best I can do through a message board.

That's what I do, but I don't really use my weak-leg to help in the stop, so I always turn left, swing out my right leg. What I do to help swing my leg out is try to twist my foot inward to get the rear wheels off the ground; Then apply force evenly along all the wheels.

Ignore Skank Marden. If you skate without a girdle, youre asking for a degree of trouble.

Well, I don't keep my right leg on the ground when I swing it front of me. I lift it completely off the ground.

see, this is why I play goalie, so I can be a terrible skater on two surfaces.

Those were socks? I thought they were titanium ankle protectors...you really should wash those things...socks are supposed to be flexible.
