So with my growing amount of gear as i slowly stock up to be able to join a league in a few months, I'm about 2 pieces of gear away from needing a bag.
One that rolls is a must and im gonna go ahead and go for the big size (looks to be for the most part about 40x18x18). Is there any general consensus on brand and whatnot? Durability is key since i dont want to have to buy another one, preferably, ever again. Seems like the weak point of the bags would be the wheels (as with travel luggage), so steardy wheels are a must.
2 things I noticed that im curious about:
*RBK's big bag has big wheels. Is that a pretty good feature?
*These vented bags with fans and crap on them. Are these really a commodity? Are the fans battery powered or what? Is this even something worth considering? If its legit i'd consider it since it seems like a good idea on paper.
you have to plug in the bags and from what I know of people who have them, their effectiveness is hit and miss. it's really only a necessity if you live in a place where you cant air out your stuff properly or if you are too lazy to take it out of the bag.
wheels are for pussies. im a goalie, I carry my ****. Im half your size and older, too. If I can do it, so can you youngster!

Ah, but you said the magic word-- "lazy" lol. No doubt i COULD do it, but i dont particularly care to. It's hard enough getting out of the doorway of my house with a backpack, sticks, and skates let alone an enormous bag at my side lol. Not to mention i do enough manual labor at work; not to keen on it whilst enjoying myself afterward.
In addition, while i shoot around with my pals at a school i usually have to carry a bunch of other stuff so a rolly bag would be extremely handy.
anything above a plain senior sized bag is really just not necessary.
I play as a forward and use a junior bag and still have plenty of space in it.

What are the approximate dimensions of a senior bag?
Just figured since all of my gear is pretty much the biggest size they sell, I'd need a big bag as well. Just My gloves take up about 3/4 of a backpack lol
As resident bigger guy...the pants and pads get bigger so I use a 40 in bag. Don't get the wheel bags as their usual life is 1-3 years. I had my old CCM bag for 4 years and cost 35 bucks. I got the Warrior Dolomite bag since it was on sale for 49 at Hockeymonkey nad think it is cool. Only thing I would change is the skate pocket since it does not hold the skates well and have to use an end pocket instead
Hockey giant has basic bags for cheap. I have a over the shoulder bag and a regular bag with straps. They really aren't that heavy going to and from your car. I haven't looked into any bags with wheels and I'm a girl

Interesting. so it seems like a non-roller would be overall for the best. So you recomend the 40 inch?

Well now that you all have pretty much beat me into a normal bag, what do you guys recomend as far as brand and series goes?
Like I said go to Hockey Monkey and get their CCM vector V-10 bag special for like 40 bucks. Nice bag, and only has Hockeymonkey.com on the bottom of the bag
Good thing you asked this because im in the same situation right now. I have been getting by using my old backpack from high school. It holds my skates, gloves and puck. But that's about it.

Really though, im way in over my head, but its alot of fun!

I've never met a person who took to ice skating like a seal to water. Get out there and give it a shot! If I can do it, anyone can.
Oh, and just in case anyone is interested in wheeled bags, I use an TPS Ice Cap wheeled bag. The thing is huge enough to fit all my equipment (which are pretty large). I don't know what kinda mongoloids thrash their bags in matters of weeks, but my bag has lasted me years.

Reason: Wrong brand.

I know how you feel. When I started playing I was trying to pay for college at the same time.
I think it helps to really realize what you need and what you don't.
Do not buy a nice stick. You won't know how to use it.
Buy one piece at a time over time, if you really want to play.
With skating, try to play a game at the lowest level of wherever you're going to play. I played in the beginner league at my local roller rink. Thankfully, it is pretty slow. That will help you really gauge if you're a terrible skater or not. Who knows, you might be underestimating yourself! I had a little experience skating before I started, but after a year of playing in the low league, I started getting faster and have moved up two levels since then.
In terms of back to equipment, I would try Hockey Overstock
I just purchased a nice stick from there (now that I know how to shoot), and it came the next day with simple UPS shipping!
