I may show up for this one. Really don't have anything to say,
but will be interesting to hear.

I believe, at the last meeting, there was only one person there to speak up for the rink. The rink, and some of the teams there, are trying hard to make a bigger presence there this time. Any presence at all will be better than last meetings showing.

good news: most of the council, and the mayor, want to see this rink get built. At least one of the members has a son that currently skates at PISC, so I am sure that he dfinitly wants to see the rink built.

Bad news: the three bids they had were about 6 million bucks over budget. They scrapped all the bids and are going to reopen the bidding process, hoping that the current economic outlook will help lower the bids to within budget. The current rink will be shut down on a year, regardless of whether the new rink is built or not. Right now, itlooks like there may be a period of time without a rink... If it even gets built.

Well, council talked about how much the costs will be...some quotes
were between 21-25 million. The people talked about how they need
a "state of the art" 2 ice sheet arena with stadium type seating.
Which I agree since they plan on holding Tourneys for both Hockey and
Fig skating. The people also mentioned they didn't want to pay for parking
if they build the arena. I cant blame them on that one either and I still
don't understand how people put up with the way the parking is now at Pasadena
Ice rink. Some people went up and voiced their opinions with good reason.
I didn't know that Pasadena has a National Figure Skating Champion who
is looking to go to the 2010 Olympics. That was pretty huge for the cause, but
I don't think (well I know) a rink will not be built in time for 2010.
In nut shell they are leaving it out on the table for now. There is still hope.
Good turn out mostly parents and kids. Would have liked to have seen more
of the adult league hockey people. Maybe they were there, I don't know.

Wow. sounds interesting. i wish I could have made it out there. I would have brought up the fact that there's guys that play hockey every week at the Rose Bowl, hoping that there could one day be a rink for those people to play. And the group of guys that used to play in Duarte, but have that rink has since closed down. People in the Pasadena want to play hockey.

I mean, personally. i would have played ice more in Pasadena if the rink wasn't such a piece of ****. Get some nice rinks there and a lot of the guys I know have even expressed interest in playing ice every week. For $13 a session, I cant see spending that on the dumpy rink they have right now. If they build a nice rink for the players, they will come. Like that Kevin Costner movie. ha ha!

Maybe the city should contact the Kings and/or the Ducks to see if they want to sponsor it or at least ask for help selling the naming rights to recover some of the cost.

Did they breakdown these bids into their component costs?

I don't live in Pasadena, but if I did, I would lobby the city council to present itemized budgets and open the debate to hockey and figure skating people to help define tradeoffs in what they really need vs. merely want.

For example, if I were building a rink today and wanted to save money, one thing I'd consider is not having anything like a full pro shop. When people need gear, they go to the Hockey Monkeys & Hockey Giants. The only thing they need at the rink is a bare-bones pro shop that does skate sharpening and sells tape, skate laces, & cheap sticks (for when yours breaks at the last minute). That bare-bones pro shop can be run for limited hours and using rink staff that are on the premises doing other jobs 3/4 of their time (available for emergency openings as needed).

What other ideas do you people have for how to save money running a rink?

Vending Machine that has tape, pucks, wax, laces and other accessories (it's open 24 hours a day).

Only problem with that ios the pro shop is a source of income for the rink. They sublease the space to a lcoal hockey equipment retailer. They have no liability and guaranteed income.

According to a notice at the current Pasadena rink... the current rink will stay open until the new rink is built. I am not exactly sure that is true though.
