if youre in the area, bay harbor problem has one of the best youth hockey programs in southern california. i came up through it as well as everyone ive played with my whole life. nhl'ers include richard park & john grahame as well as vic venasky being a coach there.
i HIGHLY recommend bay harbor if youre close enough.
ianmonsta,
Your assessment of Bay Harbor would have been very true 10 years ago, but unfortunately they are struggling pretty bad to maintain a club these days and only have about 3 teams I believe. Plus the rink is in rough shape...They seem as though they are going to suffer the same fate as Marina Cities...
I will likely be looking at these decisions in the not-too-distant future, but I'm not sure about the advice to try roller first. Yes, it is cheaper, but a lot of skills he will have learned playing roller do not translate to ice, and in fact he will have to unlearn things in order to learn to skate on ice. Just something to consider.

I agree, I've played both and the skating styles are pretty different. Plus, how you skate affects how you shoot, etc...

I wouldnt go to Play it again sports....overpriced for used crap.
I would however scour craigslist weekly. Probably your best bet at getting gear for a good price...probably being sold by some parent who shelled out a bunch of dough for hockey equipment for their kid who pllayed guitar hero once or twice and now wants to be Eddie Van Halen.

i highly doubt he's gonna learn that much as a kid to a point where he needs to unlearn things to ice skate. i've been playing roller all my life and i was able to switch to ice instantly. i don't regret playing roller as a kid, but i'll never go back now as long as i can afford it.
and a lower investment is a good idea for kids because they change their minds very often. but hey it's not my money....

it sucks to have to go down to lakewood/anaheim galacial gardens for PCHL when I could be playing 5 minutes from the house at Bay Harbor.
yeah, that rink is pretty jacked up. it is really too bad - it would be an awesome place to play on a regular basis.
